Brandon: Hey, can we continue from where we left off last time?

Brandon: You said I have to know about the dosu of Five Immortals Playing Baduk properly before we go further. Can you explain?
저번에 오선위기 도수를 알아야 상씨름에 대해 제대로 이해할 수 있다고 네가 그랬잖아. 설명해 줄 수 있어?

I: Oh! Sangjenim’s work of renewal! Sangjenim scheduled a series of programs based on the cosmic principle for an event to occur at a certain point of time in history. These events happen in the human affairs through the intervention of the spirit realm. We call these programs a ‘dosu’.
아, 상제님의 천지공사? 상제님께서는 특정 시기가 되어서 어떤 사건이 역사에 일어나도록 우주원리를 바탕으로 일련의 계획들을 짜셨어. 이 사건들은 신명계의 개입을 통해 인사(人事)로 이루어져. 그 프로그램들을 도수(度數)라고 해.

Brandon: What about the five immortals playing the baduk?
오선위기는 무슨 뜻이야?

I: Why don’t we read a verse from the Dojeon? I think it’ll give us a better idea about the program. In chapter 5 section 6 of the Dojeon, Sangjenim tells us, “I shall destine the tides of the world through the spiritual qi of an auspicious site known as Five Immortals Playing Baduk, where two immortals contest a match, two offer advice, and one is the master of the game. The master, unable to take sides, observes the match and devotes himself solely to accommodating the guests.”

Brandon: Does that mean Sangjenim decided the future of the world using the qi of these five immortals?
그럼 상제님께서 다섯 신선의 기운으로 세계의 흐름을 결정하셨다는 뜻이야?

I: No. He is saying He harnessed the qi of an auspicious site that is shaped like five immortals playing the game of baduk. This famous auspicious site is located in Hoemunsan Mountain in Jeolla-do Province of Korea. He extracted the qi of this place and used it for the Work of Renewing Heaven and Earth.
아니. 다섯 신선이 바둑을 두는 형상의 혈자리의 기운을 쓰셨다는 말씀이야. 한국 전라도에 회문산이라는 산이 있는데 그 산에 오선위기혈이라는 유명한 혈자리가 있어. 상제님께서 그 혈자리의 기운을 뽑아다가 천지공사에 쓰신 거지.

Brandon: So, if the work of renewal of heaven and earth is Sangjenim’s plan for the future, these five immortals must each represent something, right?
그러면 말야. 천지공사가 상제님께서 미래를 위해 세우신 계획이라면 이 다섯 명의 신선도 각각 어떤 의미가 있겠네?

I: Right. Sangjenim said one immortal is the master, two are playing the game, and the other two give advice to who they support. And they represent the countries surrounding the Korean peninsula. These roles were taken by different countries over different eras. Can you guess which countries represent the five immortals in the present day?
응, 그렇지. 한 신선은 바둑판의 주인이고, 두 신선은 바둑을 두고, 또 다른 두 신선은 각자가 지지하는 편에 서서 훈수를 둔다는 거야. 이 신선들은 한반도를 둘러싼 나라들을 의미해. 신선들은 다른 시대마다 다른 나라를 상징했었거든. 다섯 신선이 지금 시대에서는 어떤 나라를 상징하는지 맞출 수 있겠어?

Brandon: Oh my, I think I know two for sure. President Trump and Xi Jinping! Two men in charge of the most powerful countries in the world.
헉! 나 두 개는 확실히 알 거 같아. 트럼프와 시진핑! 전 세계에서 가장 강대한 두 국가를 맡은 사람들이잖아.

I: Yeah, the two immortals playing the match represent the U.S. and China. Then what about the other countries?
그래, 맞았어. 바둑을 두고 있는 두 신선은 미국과 중국을 의미해. 그러면 나머지 나라들은?

Brandon: Oh, I know! The adviser at the U.S. side is Japan, and the adviser for China is North Korea?
아! 알겠다. 미국 편에서 훈수 두는 나라는 일본이고 중국 편에서 훈수 두는 나라는 북한?

I: You got it all right except one. The adviser for China is Russia.
하나 빼고 다 맞았어. 중국 편에서 훈수 두는 나라는 러시아야.

Brandon: That makes sense. I learned in World History class that Russia was the only country that could compete with the U.S. until the 80s. But what about the master?
말이 되네. 80년대까지 미국과 경쟁할 수 있었던 유일한 나라가 러시아였다고 세계사 시간에 배웠거든. 그럼 주인은 누구야?

I: The master is Korea. But it was divided by the Korean War that occurred in 1950, five years after gaining independence from Japanese annexation.
주인은 한국이야. 그런데 일제강점기로부터 독립한 지 5년 만인 1950년에 한국전쟁이 일어나서 두 개의 나라로 갈라졌지.

Brandon: Interesting. Two Koreas and the four great powers surrounding the peninsula. Come to think of it, they all participated in the six-party talks.

I: You got the point.

Brandon: Whoa! Isn’t that the reunification of Korea? The game board being returned to the master must absolutely be referring to the reunification!
오! 그건 바로 한국의 통일을 말하는 거 아냐? 판이 주인에게 되돌아간다는 건 확실히 통일이라고밖에 볼 수 없는 거 같은데!

I: That’s a part of the message. But let’s not focus only on one or two verses if we really want to understand the Work of Renewal in depth. The Work of Renewing Heaven and Earth is so vast and profound that you have to read the Dojeon in its entirety to understand it properly.
