9 An Eastern Learning mantra says, ‘Si-cheon-ju Jo-hwa-jeong&’—this speaks of My work. 10 I journeyed throughout the three realms surveying them, to address the turmoil in the spirit realm and human world by establishing the Government of Creation-Transformation and renewing heaven and earth. 11 “I finally came to your Eastern land to save its people first from the abyss of suffering and then to resolve all the bitterness and grief that has accumulated throughout the ages. 12 Those who follow Me shall gain eternal bliss in the Paradise of Immortality. My dao is the true Eastern Learning.”

인간으로 내려오신 천주님

9 동학주문에 ‘시천주조화정(侍天主造化定)’이라 하였으니 나의 일을 이름이라.
10 내가 천지를 개벽하고 조화정부를 열어 인간과 하늘의 혼란을 바로잡으려고 삼계를 둘러 살피다가
11 너의 동토에 그친 것은 잔피(殘疲)에 빠진 민중을 먼저 건져 만고에 쌓인 원한을 풀어 주려 함이니
12 나를 믿는 자는 무궁한 행복을 얻어 선경의 낙을 누리리니 이것이 참 동학이라.

동학東學 : Eastern Learning (=Donghak)

Eastern Learning is a popular Korean spiritual and social movement founded in the mid-nineteenth century by Choe Su-un (aka Choe Je-u). Eastern Learning proclaimed the coming of the Later Heaven Gaebyeok and the arrival of a mysterious disease and disasters during this gaebyeok (‘rebirth and renewal of the world’). (영어『도전』 주석)

동학은 19세기 중반 최수운(또는 최제우)이 창설한 한국의 영적, 사회적 대중운동을 말한다. 동학은 후천개벽(‘개벽’은 세상이 새로 태어남, 새로워짐을 뜻함)과, 그와 함께 오는 괴질병겁과 재앙의 소식을 선포했다.

The Entreaty of All the Ancient Spirits of Sages, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas *Dojeon 2:27

6 “While at the Maitreya Shrine, I bestowed upon Choe Su-un a heavenly mandate and spiritual inspiration to enable him to establish My boundless dao. 7 However, he failed to transcend the confines of Confucianism and reveal the true dharma, which would have laid a path to the way of spirits and a new civilization and eventually brought forth the true resplendence of My boundless dao.

8 “I therefore finally withdrew the heavenly mandate and spiritual inspiration from Choe Su-un in 1864, and in 1871, I incarnated into the world Myself. 9 I am the ‘Sangje’ revealed in Donggyeongdaejeon and in Su-un’s lyrics.”

하늘의 모든 신성과 부처와 보살이 하소연하므로

6 최수운에게 천명(天命)과 신교(神敎)를 내려 대도를 세우게 하였더니
7 수운이 능히 유교의 테 밖에 벗어나 진법(眞法)을 들춰내어 신도(神道)와 인문(人文)의 푯대를 지으며 대도의 참빛을 열지 못하므로
8 드디어 갑자(甲子)년에 천명과 신교를 거두고 신미(辛未)년에 스스로 이 세상에 내려왔나니

Sangjenim Plants in Taejeon the Flag for the Founding of the Paradise of Immortality *Dojeon 5:106

1 Sangjenim one day proclaimed, “My ilkkun slumber in the Bean Field, awaiting the coming of the time. 2 I have planted in Taejeon the flag for the founding of the Later Heaven’s Paradise of Immortality.”

This Place Is the Hallowed Ground of the Emperor *Dojeon 5:234
10 I shall make Taejeon My home and bring about the union of humans and spirits. Taejeon shall hence become the new capital.”

후천선경 건설의 푯대를 태전에 꽂으심

1 하루는 상제님께서 말씀하시기를 “일꾼이 콩밭(太田)에서 낮잠을 자며 때를 넘보고 있느니라.” 하시고
2 “내가 후천선경 건설의 푯대를 태전(太田)에 꽂았느니라.” 하시니라.

이 곳이 제왕지지니라
10 “태전을 집을 삼고 인신합덕을 하리니 태전이 새 서울이 된다.”

4주의 말씀 : 의통공사

The Judgment Between Humanity’s Life and Death: A Work of Renewal for Uitong *Dojeon 7:50

1 In Daeheung-ri Village, on a winter day in 1908, Sangjenim wrote a message
2 horizontally on each of the first fifteen pages of a thirty-page notebook: 背恩忘德萬死神 The betrayal of benevolence brings the betrayer ten thousand deaths.
3 In the middle of the same pages, He wrote vertically:
一分明 一陽始生 This invariably comes to pass: yang begins to rise.
4 On each of the remaining fifteen pages, He wrote horizontally: 作之不止聖醫雄藥 Never falter in carrying out the noble work of heaven and earth: saintly healing that cures the world and heroic medicine that delivers the world.
5 In the middle, He wrote vertically:
一陰始生 Yin begins to rise.
6 After He finished writing, Sangjenim placed cinnabar powder and a small bowl on the floor and said to Gim Gwang-chan, “This work shall determine the path of life and the path of death. Consider carefully and then speak your thoughts.”
7 “I think those who disavow or who do not honor their ancestral spirits will find it difficult to receive the qi of life,” Gwang-chan replied.
8 Sangjenim pondered this for a time. “You are correct.” He wrapped the bowl in paper, pressed the mouth of the bowl into the cinnabar powder, and then stamped each page of the notebook with the powdered bowl as if with a seal. 9 As He did so, Sangjenim proclaimed, “This is the seal of imperial authority.”

1 무신년 겨울에 대흥리에 계시더니 하루는 종이 서른 장 되는 양지책에
2 앞 열다섯 장에는 면마다 옆으로
背恩忘德萬死神 이라 쓰시고
