I: Yeah. we came a long way but we both worked hard, right? But I’m sure nobody ever imagined you of all people would get a perfect score on the written exam.

Brandon: Didn’t I tell you I’m super-duper smart? Haha. Anyways, I have to offer the fresh water and practice meditation every day starting today, right? It makes me a little worried whether I could continue to do the practices on a daily basis. As you know, I get a little lazy sometimes.
내가 완전 머리가 좋다고 말하지 않았었나? ㅎㅎ 그런 그렇고, 오늘부터 나도 이제 일꾼으로서 매일 봉청수하고 수행을 해야 하잖아. 가끔 게을러지는 내가 생활신앙을 꾸준히 이어갈 수 있을지 좀 걱정이야.

I: I know what you mean. The fundamental daily practices are difficult because you have to do it every day. I’ve been a Jeung San Do practitioner for almost 10 years, but still I find myself procrastinating when I’m so tired. You just have to make the daily practice a habit if you want to overcome such feelings.
무슨 말인지 알겠어. 근본신앙은 매일매일 해야 하는 거니까 어렵더라고. 나도 신앙한 지 10년이 다 되어 가지만 아직도 너무 피곤할 때는 나중에 하려고 미루려는 나 자신을 발견하지. 그런 마음까지 극복하려면 근본신앙을 체질화하는 수밖에 없지.

Brandon: Any advise on how I can get on top of my laziness?
게으름을 극복하려면 어떻게 해야 할까?

I: Well... As for me, I read the Dojeon or autobiographies of Taesang Jongdosanim and Jongdosanim whenever I feel lazy or I’m stuck in a groove. Then I feel my mind refreshing and reawakening. I mean, I feel my mind being restored and standing fast. So I know from experience that there’s power in their sacred words.
음... 이건 내 개인적인 방법인데 나는 신앙하다가 나태한 마음이 들거나 할 때는 도전 성구나 태상종도사님, 종도사님의 도훈 말씀을 읽곤 해. 그러면 다시 마음이 새로워지고 다시 깨어져. 내 마음이 다시 굳건하게 바로 서는 게 느껴져. 그래서 나는 경험적으로 당신님들 말씀 속에 그런 힘이 있는 거 같아.

Brandon: The same thing goes for me, ’cause I also experienced that I get inspired and encouraged when reading the verses from the Dojeon, especially chapter 8. Even if I find myself in humility reading the words. You know what I mean?
나도 그래. 특히 도전 8편에 있는 성구들을 읽으면 힘이 막 나는 거 같더라고. 말씀을 읽다가도 가끔 한없이 겸허해지는 내 모습을 발견하게 되지만 말이야... 무슨 말인지 알지?

I: Of course. It feels like it’s really easy to do what Sangjenim tells us to do yet it’s very difficult to put it in action. So we’re all humbled in their sacred words time after time. But each person has their own strengths and weaknesses, so we just have to focus on our strengths and try to strengthen our weaknesses, step by step. I have some words of Taesang Jongdosanim and Jongdosanim that will help you a lot.
당연하지. 상제님께서 하라시는 대로 하는 게 참 쉽게 느껴지지만 행동으로 옮기기엔 어려운 거 같아. 그래서 아마 시간이 흐르면 흐를수록 당신님들의 성언 앞에서 초라해지는 거 같고. 하지만 우리는 저마다 장단점을 갖고 있으니까 장점을 키우고 단점은 조금씩 고쳐나가면 돼. 너한테 힘이 될 태상종도사님과 종도사님의 이 말씀들이 있어.

Brandon: What are they?
어떤 말씀들인데?

I: You know that Sangjenim announced, “It is I who devise and it is you who shall accomplish,” right? Jongdosanim explained to us about this verse. Jongdosanim said, “Sangjenim restructured the order of the Early Heaven and laid out a new path guiding humanity to the new world of the Later Heaven. But whether His plans actualize or not solely depends on the hand of Sangjenim’s workers. How splendid is this proclamation and promise that humanity can overcome gaebyeok and gain the Later Heaven’s Paradise of Immortality on its own! We will not enter the Later Heaven’s world or will not be saved by the power of a particular god or by the spiritual power of nature, as ascertained by the Early Heaven’s religions and beliefs. Rather, humanity will overcome gaebyeok and enter the Later Heaven’s world by itself.”
상제님 말씀 중에 ‘모사재천 성사재인’이라는 말씀이 있잖아. 그 성구에 대한 종도사님 도훈이거든. “이 말씀은 상제님께서 천지의 질서를 뜯어고쳐 후천 새 세상으로 나아갈 수 있도록 판을 짜 놓으셨지만 그것을 현실 역사에서 이루는 것은 당신의 일꾼들, 인간의 손에 달려 있다는 말씀입니다. 인간이 온전히 자기 힘으로 개벽을 넘고 후천선경을 건설하고 그곳에 들어갈 수 있다, 이 얼마나 멋진 선언이요 약속입니까. 옛날 선천세상의 종교나 신앙에서 그랬던 것처럼, 어떤 신의 힘에 의지해서, 어떤 자연의 영적인 힘을 빌려서 인간이 구원을 받거나 후천세상에 들어가는 것이 아닙니다.”

Brandon: Ah... “I devises and you accomplish.”- That’s one of my favorite verses!
아, 모사재천 성사재인! 내가 감동받았던 성구들 중에 하나인데...ㅠ.ㅠ

I: Taesang Jongdosanim also taught us that Sangjenim’s workers will bring completion to Sangjenim’s work of renewing heaven and earth-and even to the cultivation of humanity by the universe. Sangjenim’s workers are those who carry out the work on behalf of Sangjenim, the universe, and of the heaven and earth.
또 태상종도사님께서는 이렇게 말씀해주셨어. “상제님이 천지공사 보신 것도, 우주에서 사람농사 지은 것도, 상제님의 일꾼들이 마무리를 한다. 상제님의 일꾼들은 바로 상제님의 대역자요， 우주의 대역자요， 천지의 대역자다.”라고 말이야.

Brandon: I actually got shocked when you told me about the third change in the dao affairs that Taesang Jongdosanim and Jongdosanim pioneered together. They had to visit door to door in towns of rural regions and cities to personally convey the teachings. And I just couldn’t believe that there had not been a single dojang when they first started.
저번에 네가 3변 도운 개척사를 얘기해줬을 때 나 사실 좀 충격을 받았었거든. 그 당시에 정말 도장이 하나도 없었다는 게 믿기지 않았어. 태상종도사님과 종도사님께서 가가호호 일일이 다니시면서 포교하셨다는 이야기도 그렇고 말이야.

I: You’re right, Brandon. We have so many books and tv shows on STB Broadcasting now so it indeed has become a hundred times easier to convey the teachings than in the past thanks to the efforts of Taesang Jongdosanim and Jongdosanim. But remember Sangjenim’s saying, “Three sacks of beads will not become jewelry unless they are strung together.” He is emphasizing the importance of our actions.
맞아, 브랜든, 지금은 이렇게 진리서적도 많고 상생방송 프로그램들도 있고, 태상종도사님과 종도사님의 노력 덕분에 상제님 진리를 전하는 게 과거보다 백배는 수월해진 것 같다. 하지만 “구슬이 서 말이어도 꿰어야 보배가 된다.”라는 말씀이 있잖아. 상제님께서는 우리의 실천의 중요성을 강조하시고 계신 거야.
