Brandon:
얼마 전에 영화 코코를 봤었는데 거기도 보면 돌아가신 조상님들이 나오잖아. 네가 저번에 도장에서 조상님들께 치성이란 걸 모셨다고 얘기했던 게 생각나더라.
I watched the movie Coco a while ago and the main character’s ancestors came out. That reminded me of the time when you told me that you offered a chiseong to your ancestors at the dojang last time.

I :
아 그래? 나도 영화 코코를 보고 나서 멕시코에도 돌아가신 조상들을 기리는 ‘죽은 자의 날’이라는 명절이 있다는 걸 처음 알게 됐어.
Oh, it did? I found out for the first time that there, too, is a special holiday to honor ancestors in Mexico, called the ‘Dia de los Muertos’ after I watched the movie.

Brandon:
그런데 영화에서는 돌아가신 조상님들을 모두 살아 움직이는 해골 정도로 묘사해 놨더라고. 실제로도 그런 건 아니겠지? 죽으면 살아 있는 뼈다귀가 되는 거야?
By the way, the movie described all the ancestors as a sort of walking skeletons. Is that really what happens? Do you become a living-skeleton after you die?

I:
영화는 멕시코의 문화를 그린 거니까 그렇게 표현한 거고, 실제로는 그렇지는 않지. 내가 저번에 너한테 ‘신명’에 대해서 이야기하다 말았었지?
It’s described that way ’cause it was a movie about the Mexican culture. But to tell you the truth, it isn’t anything like what you’ve seen in the film. I didn’t finish telling you about spiritual beings last time, did I?

Brandon:
조금만 얘기해 줬었지. 네가 나한테 사람은 겉사람과 속사람으로 이뤄져 있다고 했었잖아.
You told me a little. You said that our bodies consist of an outer body and an inner body.

I:
응. 맞아. 이렇게 눈에 보이는 겉사람인 육체가 있고, 그 육체 안에는 영체라고 불리는 속사람이 있지. 그리고 그 영체는 혼과 넋으로 이뤄져 있지.
Yes, that’s right. We have this physical body, an outer body, that you can see, and there’s an inner body called an astral body. And this astral body consists of a heavenly soul and an earthly soul.

Brandon:
혼과 넋? 그건 또 무슨 말이야?
Heavenly soul and earthly soul? What the heck are you saying?

I:
네가 쉽게 이해할 수 있게 설명해 줄게. 혼과 넋은 동전의 앞뒷면처럼, 영체를 이루고 있는 음양적인 두 요소라고 할 수 있어. 도전을 읽어 보면 상제님께서 이런 말씀을 하셨어. “사람에게는 혼(魂)과 넋(魄)이 있어 혼은 하늘에 올라가 신(神)이 되어 제사를 받다가 4대가 지나면 영(靈)도 되고 혹 선(仙)도 되며, 넋은 땅으로 돌아가 4대가 지나면 귀(鬼)가 되느니라.”
Let me explain in an easier way. The heavenly soul and the earthly soul can be called ‘the two sides of a coin’ of the astral body just like yin and yang. In the Dojeon, Sangjenim tells us that, “After death, the heavenly soul ascends to heaven and becomes a spirit. After receiving ancestral memorial offering rituals from four generations of descendants, the spirit might then become a radiant being or even an immortal being. And after death, the earthly soul returns to earth and, after four generations, becomes a ghostly being.”

Brandon:
네가 한 말 이해 못한다는 거 당연히 알고 있겠지?
You obviously know I can’t understand what you said, right?

I:
ㅎㅎ 알아, 그러니까 설명해 줄게. 영체는 혼과 넋, 두 가지로 이루어져 있는데 혼은 하늘 기운을 받아서 생겨난 거고, 넋은 땅의 기운을 받아 생겨난 거야. 그리고 둘 다 무형이고.
Haha, right. Let me tell you. What it means is that the astral body consists of the two different things, the heavenly soul and the earthly soul. The heavenly soul comes into being with the qi of heaven, and the earthly soul comes into being with the qi of earth, the ground. They both are immaterial.

Brandon:
음... 그래서 혼은 우리가 죽으면 하늘로 올라가고, 넋은 땅으로 다시 돌아간다는 거야?
So you’re saying that after we die, our heavenly soul goes up to heaven and the earthly soul goes back to earth, right?

I:
맞아. 그리고 우리가 죽는다고 해서 그게 영원한 죽음이 아닌 거지. 신명이 되어서 천상에서 계속 사니까. 상제님의 말씀에서 4대, 그러니까 약 120년 정도가 지나면 영이나 선도 될 수 있다고 하셨잖아.
Exactly. And the thing is, our death as a human being is not an eternal death. We can continue to live on as a spirit in heaven. Sangjenim said that we could even turn into a radiant being or an immortal being, about 120 years or four generations later.

Brandon:
인간으로 사는 것보다 더 오래 사네? 그럼 영과 선은 어떤 존재야?
We’re gonna live longer than we do on earth. Ok, then, what are radiant beings and immortal beings?

I:
영이나 선은 그냥 신명이 아니고 영적으로 훨씬 더 진화한 존재야. 100년 이상 천상에서 도를 잘 닦는 신명이라야만 영이나 선이 되는 거야.
Radiant beings and immortal beings are not just normal spirits. They are amazingly spiritually-evolved beings. So you can become either of them only when you sincerely cultivate yourself with dao more than 100 years in heaven.

Brandon:
만약에 천상에서 도를 안 닦으면 어떻게 되는데?
What if I don’t practice dao in heaven?

I:
몇백 년은 살 수 있겠지. 하지만 도를 닦지 않으면 언젠가는 정기가 흩어져서 연기와 같이 소멸한다고 상제님께서 말씀하셨어. 그게 바로 영원한 죽음인 거지.
Maybe you’ll live up to a few hundred years, but eventually you’re gonna vanish just like mere smoke if you don’t practice meditation. ’Cause your essence would be scattered into the thin air. This is what Sangjenim told us. And this is the second death.

Brandon:
아...사람으로서도 죽고 신명이 되어서도 죽고. 두 번 죽는 거네. 하...그럼 산다는 게 무슨 의미인 거지?
Oh, gosh. So, we're gonna die as a human and die again as a spirit? What’s the point of living?

I:
무슨 소리야? 도를 닦으면 죽지 않고 영원히 산다니까. 너 졸고 있었냐?
What are you talking about? I said that, if you practice dao, you will not die but live eternally as a spirit. Were you dozing off?

Brandon:
알았어. 진정해. 그러면 넋은 어떻게 되는데?
Gosh, I was just joking. Calm down. So what happens to the earthly souls?

I:
넋은 땅의 기운을 받아 생겨난 거잖아. 그러니까 사람이 죽으면 넋은 육체와 함께 땅 속에 묻히고 거기서 4대가 지나면 귀라는 존재가 돼. 한국 사람들이 보통 ‘귀신’이라고 부르잖아. 그 말이 바로 귀와 신을 합한 말이야.
The earthly souls are born with the qi of earth. So, when people die, their bodies which hold the earthly soul, are buried in the ground. And after four generations, the earthly soul becomes a ghostly being. Koreans have a word ‘귀신’, and that is a combined word of ‘귀’ meaning ‘a ghostly being’ and ‘신’ meaning ‘a spirit’.

Brandon:
한국 사람들은 사후 세계에 대해서도 굉장히 세분화된 개념을 갖고 있는 게 되게 신기하다. 제사도 열심히 지내고. 다음에도 재미난 얘기 해 주는 거다. 알겠지? 재미있어서 그래.
It’s really interesting that Korean people have such a sophisticated concept about the afterlife. And they offer ancestral rites so often and quite seriously. Hey, you’re going to tell me more on this next time, OK? It’s fun!.
