Brandon: Did you watch it? Joseon’s royal army and Imperial Japanese army literally slaughtered hundreds of thousands of innocent Donghak followers.

I: Yeah. Just like we talked about this last time, Brandon, Donghak Peasant Revolution was an explosion of bitterness and grief that they harbored in their hearts. Because during the late 19th century in the Joseon dynasty, the common people tremendously suffered from heavy taxation and exploitation by corrupt officials.
맞아. 브랜든, 우리가 지난번에도 얘기했던 것처럼 동학농민혁명은 백성들의 가슴에 쌓인 원과 한이 터져 나온 거였어. 19세기 말 조선 시대가 부패한 관리들의 탈세와 수탈이 극에 달했던 때였거든.

Brandon: At the heart of the problem were corrupt officials...

I: But that wasn’t the only problem. Neighboring countries such as the Qing Dynasty China and Japan, were long casting a greedy eye over Joseon. And at the moment of the Donghak Revolution, Japan dispatched their troops to Joseon with a lame excuse, saying, “We’re going to help you put down the rebellion.”
그것만이 문제가 아니었어. 중국 청나라와 일본 같은 이웃 나라들도 오랫동안 호시탐탐 조선을 노리고 있었거든. 그러다가 동학 혁명이 터지자 일본은 “우리가 반란 진압을 도와주겠다.”는 말도 안 되는 핑계를 대면서 조선으로 군대를 파견했지.

Brandon: It must have been quite an unstable and hopeless period. Common people must've looked for a divine intervention.
정말 불안하고 참담한 시기였겠다. 민초들이 신의 손길을 구하고 있었을 게 틀림없어.

I: You’re right. The say one fourth to one third of the whole population believed in Eastern Learing(Dong-hak). That’s about two to three million out of ten million of people. Because the message of Eastern Learning that the Lord of Heaven, Sangjenim, would come to the land of Joseon and make a new world where all men are truly equal, was so fascinating that it gave people hope and courage to live on.
맞아. 당시에 전체 인구의 4분의 1에서 3분의 1이 동학을 믿었다고 해. 1천만 인구 중에 2백만에서 3백만 정도가 동학신도였어. 천주이신 상제님이 조선 땅에 오셔서 모든 사람이 평등하게 대우받는 새 세상을 열어주실 거라는 동학의 가르침이 너무도 멋지다 보니 사람들에게 삶을 살아갈 희망과 용기를 줬던 거지.

Brandon: Wow...Now that I heard the whole story, it makes more sense to me. Then are there any other messages that I should know about other than Sicheonju?
와... 이야길 다 들으니까 이제 더 이해가 돼. 그러면 시천주 말고 내가 알아야 될 다른 가르침은 또 없었어?

I: Of course! Sacred Venerable Choe Su-un proclaimed in his text Yongdam-yusa, “The fate of the mysterious disease spreading across the entire world-is this not ‘gaebyeok, once again?’” This is a message you should remember.
당연히 더 있지. 최수운 대신사는 《용담유사》에 “십이제국 괴질운수 다시 개벽 아닐런가.”라는 선언을 남겼어. 이 메시지는 기억해야 해.

Brandon: Gaebyeok once again? What does that mean?
“다시 개벽?” 그게 무슨 뜻이야?

I: His Holiness the Jongdosanim said, “‘Gaebyeok, once again’ means when the new order of change of the universe comes forth through the gaebyeok, a new world will be established on earth.”
종도사님께서 말씀해 주셨는데, “‘다시 개벽’은 앞으로 개벽이 되고 우주의 새 질서가 나오면서 지상에 새 세상이 열린다는 뜻이다.”라고 하셨어.

Brandon: So the new world here stands for the paradise in the Later Heaven, right? But still, why did they say “once again gaebyeok,” emphasizing on “once again?”
여기서 말하는 새 세상이라는 건 후천선경을 의미하겠네, 맞지? 그런데 “다시 개벽”이라고 했잖아. 왜 ‘다시’라는 말에 강조를 둔 거야?

I: That’s because gaebyeok isn’t something that happens only one single time. In a cycle of cosmic year, gaebyeok always happens in between the cosmic seasons. Hey, you can’t forget about all of our conversation about Jeung San Do’s cosmology, so soon!

Brandon: Wow. Donghak not only paved the way for Sangjenim’s incarnation, but also served as one of the most historic events in the modern history of Korea.

I: And it also led to devastating changes and developments of the modern civilization.

I: Well, upon the Imperial Japanese army’s arrival in Joseon, China also sent its army to Joseon. So the outcome of Donghak Revolution was the Sino-Japanese War and then the Russo-Japanese war. Japan won both wars and Russia eventually turned her head towards Europe. And a few years later, as you know, the assassination of the Austrian crown prince touched off the World War 1.
일본이 군대를 조선에 파병하자 청나라도 똑같이 조선에 군대를 보냈거든. 동학혁명의 결과물로 청일전쟁, 뒤이어 러일전쟁이 일어난 거지. 일본이 이 두 개의 전쟁에서 승리하면서 러시아는 자연스럽게 유럽으로 관심을 돌렸어. 그리고 너도 알다시피 그로부터 몇 년 뒤에 오스트리아 황태자 저격 사건이 일어나면서 1차 세계 대전이 발발한 거야.

Brandon: Wow. So essentially, the Donghak Revolution changed the world!

I: Yep. His Holiness the Jongdosanim said, “With Sangjenim’s incarnation and the Donghak’s message of gaebyeok that resonated in the world, humanity has welcomed the era of “Gaebyeok, once again.” And this proclamation of gaebyeok marked the true starting point of the modern history that clearly divides the world up until then and the world that unfolded thereafter.
