Brandon: I can’t count them all but I really can’t understand this part where Taemonim says, “Samsin gives birth, and the Seven Stars nurture.”
다 셀 수 없지만 태모님이 “삼신은 낳고 칠성은 기른다.”고 하신 부분은 정말 이해가 어려워.

I: Oh. “Samsin gives birth and the Seven Stars nurture.” How mysterious, isn’t it? Even though I’m Korean, I only came to know about the importance of Samsin and the Seven Stars for the first time when I met Jeung San Do. So it’s natural that you didn’t understand it at all.
아, 삼신은 낳고 칠성은 기른다? 정말 신비로운 말씀이지, 안 그래? 한국인인 나도 삼신과 칠성의 중요성에 대해서는 증산도를 신앙하면서 처음 알았거든. 네가 모르는 것도 당연하지.

Brandon: What does it mean anyways?
도대체 무슨 뜻이야?

I: Well, Koreans referred to the universe's Holy Spirit of Creation as Samsin, meaning ‘Spirit of Three’. His Holiness the Jongdosanim said, “The great parents of human beings and all things that give birth to heaven and earth, are called Samsin. Samsin is also the foundation of heaven and earth, being the divine nature of heaven and earth itself.”
음. 한국인들은 고대로부터 우주의 조물주 하느님을 일컬어 삼신이라고 했어. 종도사님께서는, 천지를 낳아서 존재하게 하는 것이 삼신이므로 삼신은 인간과 만물 생명의 원 부모가 된다고 하셨어. 삼신은 천지의 바탕, 천지의 신성 자체라고도 하셨지.

Brandon: The divinity of heaven and earth that gives birth to all things is called Samsin? Then what's the relation between Sangjenim and Samsin?
만물을 낳는 천지의 신성이 삼신이라고? 그럼 상제님이랑 삼신의 관계는 뭔데?

I: Good question. Chapter 1 Section 1 of the Dojeon states that God governs all the universe from Heaven’s Golden Palace, being one with Samsin, and the God is Sangjenim. In other words, Sangjenim is the Supreme God who presides over the universe with the divine authority of Samsin.
좋은 질문이야. 도전 1편 1장에는 삼신과 하나 되어 천상의 호천금궐에서 온 우주를 다스리시는 하느님이 상제님이시라고 나오잖아. 즉 상제님은 삼신의 신권을 갖고 우주를 주재하는 최고신이셔.

Brandon: So, can we say that Samsin is the spirit without a physical form, right? Because Samsin is the divine spirit of creation of the universe.

I: Wow, you’re awesome....It kinda weirds me out that you understand what I’m saying so well these days.

Brandon: I’m probably the smartest person you’ll ever meet. One more thing. I remember the woman in a red suit appeared as Samsin Grandmother in the drama Dokkaebi. Is she the same being with the Samsin you just described?
난 아마도 네가 아는 사람들 중에서 제일 똑똑한 사람일걸? 하나만 더. 전에 봤던 드라마 <도깨비>에 빨간 정장을 입은 어떤 여자가 삼신할매로 나왔잖아. 그 삼신할매랑 네가 설명해준 삼신이랑 같아?

I: You can think of the two along the same lines. Remember I told you that Samsin is the Holy Spirit which gave life to all things? In Korean folk beliefs, people believed that a child would be born in a blessing from Samsin Grandmother. It shows that the tradition of worshipping Samsin has settled in a familiar way in people's customs. And, there are some ancestral spirits who get involved in granting their descendants children, and they are called samsin, too.
같은 맥락으로 보면 돼. 삼신이 만물을 낳은 조물주라고 했잖아. 한국의 민간 신앙에서는 아이가 태어날 때는 반드시 삼신 할매의 점지를 받아서 태어난다고 믿었거든. 삼신신앙이 사람들 풍습 속에 친근하게 자리를 잡은 거지. 그리고 자손에게 아이를 점지해주는 일을 하는 조상신명들이 있는데 그분들도 삼신으로 불려.

Brandon: Then why do they say ‘Samsin,’ and not just God? Do you know what the number three here means?
그러면 왜 굳이 그냥 신이 아니고 삼신이라고 한 거지? 3이라는 숫자에 어떤 의미가 있는지 알아?

I: Would I be talking to you had I not known about it? Samsin is the One Spirit, as the one and absolute origin of all things. But this One Spirit functions as Samsin, the Holy Spirit of Three, upon its manifestation in the real world: the Spirit of Creation that begets all things, the Spirit of Edification that nurtures and enlightens all things, and the Spirit of Governance that maintains the order of all things. I learned this from Hwandangogi.

I: The seven stars we’re talking about here is the Big Dipper. The Big Dipper has been considered a sacred constellation in both the East and the West.
여기서 말하는 칠성은 북두칠성이야. 북두칠성은 동서양에서 공통적으로 신성한 별로 여겨졌었지.

Brandon: You’re right. In the Christian Holy Bible, there are several passages featuring the Seven Sacred Spirits of God or the seven churches. When I used to go to church, I learned that the number seven had the symbolic meanings such as perfection, peace, and completion.
맞아. 기독교 성경에도 보면 하느님의 칠성령(七聖靈) 또는 일곱 교회가 들어가는 구절이 여러 번 나와. 예전에 교회 다닐 때 숫자 7이 완벽함, 평온, 그리고 완성 같은 뜻을 가졌다고 배웠었어.

I: Then can you guess the reason for the number seven being a particularly important number?

I: Haha. Calm down. Let me give you a hint. You said you’ve watched the drama Dokkaebi, right? One of the scenes in the first episode was where we see people gathering in the field around the main character’s body, looking at it and praying, “Oh, Chilseongnim, Chilseongnim~.” Who do you think they were referring to by ‘Chilseongnim?’

Brandon: Chilseongnim? A god who rules the Big Dipper?

I: You almost got it. Chilseongnim refers to Sangjenim because the Big Dipper is the constellation where He resides. The Big Dipper is the constellation in the center of the universe that grants human beings blessings for longevity, realization, enlightenment, and fortune or misfortune.
비슷했어. 칠성님은 상제님을 지칭하는 말이야. 왜냐면 상제님이 계신 별이 바로 북두칠성이거든. 북두칠성은 우주의 중심별로 인간의 무병장수와 생사화복, 도통과 깨달음을 관장하는 곳이야.

Brandon: So that's why Taemonim said, “The Seven Stars nuture.” The Seven Stars constellation is where we can receive the superpowers!
그래서 “칠성은 기른다.”고 하신 거구나. 칠성에서 슈퍼파워가 내려오는 거였구나!

I: Yeah... Okay... You know about the traditional game yutnori, right? Its board looks exactly like four Seven Stars constellations spread out on each side of the four directions: north, south, east and west. The circle in the center stands for the North Star, Polaris, which is the pivot point of celestial bodies' rotation. Also, Koreans would lay a chilseongpan to bury one's body in a coffin. It means that people believed those who passed away would return to the Seven Stars, where they actually came from.
