Brandon: Hey, do you watch the drama Nokdu Flower?
야 너도 요새 드라마 녹두꽃 보냐?
I: Nokdu Flower? Are you kidding? Of course! It’s the TV series about the Donghak Peasant Revolution.
아 녹두꽃. 장난하냐? 당연하지. 동학농민혁명을 주제로 한 드라마잖아.

Brandon: I knew it. The two things you love the most are drama and history. It’s least likely for you to miss out on it. You know, there was a scene where Jo Jeong-seok came out in the battle field and he started shouting “Si-cheon-ju...”
하기야, 네가 세상에서 제일 좋아하는 게 드라마랑 역사인데 안 볼 리가 없지. 저번에는 배우 조정석이 나와서 “시천주~” 그러면서 무언가를 읽는 멋있는 장면이 나오더라고.

I: That scene made me so sad that I literally cried. It was so heartbreaking to see those innocent farmers fighting against the royal forces without any proper weapons other than bamboo pikes. It reminded me of the 300,000 plus people that lost their lives during the revolution.
그 장면 보는데 마음이 아파서 눈물이 나더라... 농민군들이 제대로 된 무기도 없이 죽창만 들고서 관군이랑 싸우는 장면 보니까 정말 슬프더라. 동학농민혁명 때 농민군들이 30만 명이 넘게 죽었었다는 게 생각나더라고.

Brandon: That is so sad. But what does that “Si-cheon-ju” mean? I thought if it gave them such courage, it must have a profound meaning in it. I thought you would know.
그거 정말 슬프다. 그런데 그 “시천주...”가 무슨 말인데? 어떤 의미가 있길래 그렇게 용기를 줄 수 있는 건지 궁금했어. 너는 알 거 같아서.

I: Ah, that’s the Sicheonjuju Mantra that Sangjenim bestowed upon the Sacred Venerable Choe Su-un in 1860 when Su-un received enlightenment directly from Sangjenim. It goes like this. Si-cheon-ju Jo-hwa-jeong Yeong-se-bul-mang Man-sa-ji. And it means, “By serving the Lord of Heaven, I co-determine the destiny of Creation-Transformation. I will never forget, throughout all eternity, His infinite grace of bestowing enlightenment of omniscience.”
아, 그건 시천주주(侍天主呪)야. 최제우 대신사가 1860년에 상제님으로부터 직접 도통을 받으면서 내려 받은 주문이잖아. 모두 열 석자로 되어 있어. 시천주조화정 영세불망만사지(侍天主造化定 永世不忘萬事知). 그 의미는 ‘천주님을 모시고 조화를 정하니 만사에 도통하는 큰 은혜를 영원토록 잊지 못한다.’는 뜻이야.

Brandon: You’re saying Donghak also talked about faith in God?
동학에서도 하나님에 대한 신앙을 얘기했다는 거야?

I: Exactly, that’s the key. The Sacred Venerable Choe Su-un detailed his holy experience of conversing with Sangjenim in the Scriptures Donggyeongdaejeon. It reads that he heard a voice resonating from the heavens declaring, “Do not fear, and do not be alarmed. I am the one whom people call Sangje—why do you not know Sangje?”
응. 바로 그게 핵심이지. 동학의 경전인 『동경대전東經大全』에 보면 최제우 대신사가 천상문답사건에 대해 자세히 기록한 내용이 나오는데, 그때 대신사는 천상으로부터 이런 음성을 들었어. “두려워하지 말고 겁내지 말라. 세상 사람들이 나를 상제라 이르거늘 너는 상제를 알지 못하느냐.”

Brandon: Is that true? Then why didn’t they mention anything about Sangjenim in the TV series so far?
그래? 그럼 왜 지금 녹두꽃 드라마에는 상제님 얘기는 하나도 안 나오는 거야?

I: Good question. After the Sacred Venerable died as a martyr, the second and third leaders of Eastern Learning took hold of the movement. And since they were limited in their understanding of the core message of Eastern Learning, they self-interpreted the truth and the teachings eventually became greatly distorted.
좋은 질문이야. 최제우 대신사가 순교하시고 나서 제2대, 제3대 교주가 동학을 이끌게 되거든. 그러면서 그들이 동학의 핵심 가르침을 깨닫지 못해서 자의대로 해석했고 그래서 결국은 크게 왜곡하게 돼.

Brandon: They distorted the teachings? Why in the world did they do such a thing?
가르침을 왜곡했다고? 도대체 왜 그런 일을 한 거야?

I: It’s unfortunate but that just shows us their limited understanding. Choe Su-un proclaimed the teachings of Sicheonju in the first place with Sicheonju being the key message of Donghak. The ideology of Sicheonju teaches us to serve the Heavenly Lord who is coming as a human into the land of Joseon in order to save humanity from the Autumn Gaebyeok. Su-un’s successors didn’t know anything about it.
불행한 일이지만 그게 그들의 이해의 한계를 보여주는 거야. 원래 최제우 대신사가 전한 동학 가르침의 핵심은 ‘시천주’ 사상이거든. 앞으로 오는 가을 개벽으로부터 인류를 구원하시기 위해 천주님이 인간으로 조선 땅에 오시는데 그분을 잘 모시라는 게 원래 시천주 사상이지. 수운을 계승한 자들이 이걸 모른 거지.

Brandon: So how did it change?
그래서 어떻게 변했는데?

I: The second leader Choe Si-hyeong changed the teaching into Sa-in-yeo-cheon, meaning “Revere people as you revere heaven.” The third leader Son Byeong-hee changed the name of the movement from Donghak to Cheondogyo, the Religion of the Heavenly Way, and sloganized and taught about the In-nae-cheon, meaning “Humans are heaven.”
2대 교주 최시형은 ‘시천주’를 ‘사인여천’(事人如天: 사람을 섬기되 하늘같이 하라)으로, 그리고 3대 교주 손병희는 교명을 천도교로 바꾸면서 ‘인내천’(人乃天: 사람이 곧 하늘이다)이라는 가르침을 폈지.

Brandon: The only thing that I heard about Donghak was In-nae-cheon until now. Quite a back story there.
나는 지금까지 동학에 대해서 ‘인내천’밖에 못 들어봤어. 이런 비하인드 스토리가 있구나.

I: Yup. Jongdosanim gave us the best definition of Donghak. He said, “The core message of Donghak, Eastern Learning, is that the Ruler of the Universe, Sangjenim, whom the Korean people had worshipped for 9,000 years, would incarnate into the eastern land and His supreme teachings would be guiding the humanity into the Era of Creation-Transformation, the civilization of God the Father.”
응. 동학에 대해서는 증산도 종도사님께서 최고의 정의를 내려주셨지. “동학의 주제는 동방 한민족이 9천 년 동안 섬겨왔던 천제문화의 원 주인공인 우주의 통치자 상제님이 동방 땅에 강세하시고, 그분의 무극대도 진리가 나와서 앞으로 인류 문화가 아버지성부님 문명시대, 시천주조화정의 조화문명시대로 들어간다는 것입니다.”

Brandon: Ah... So what those good people shouted was a mantra that calls out for Sangjenim. So, in a way, it was their prayer to Sangjenim, asking Him to be with them. It clearly seemed like they were shouting in anger but why is it that my heart is so aching?
아...그러면 그 선량한 사람들이 외쳤던 게 상제님을 부르는 주문이었네? 어떻게 보면 ‘하나님이시어, 우리와 함께해 주시옵소서’ 하는 기도였잖아. 분명히 분노에 차서 소리를 지르는 거 같았는데 왜 이렇게 마음이 아프지?
