Brandon: My mom keeps telling me North and South Korea are going to reunite soon since the presidents from the U.S. and North Korea had this big meeting, but I don’t think it’s gonna happen that easily.
요즘 우리 엄마가 계속 미국 대통령이랑 북한 대통령이 만났으니까 이제 금방 통일이 된다고 그러시던데, 난 그렇게 쉽게 통일이 안 될 거 같아.

I: I think so, too. I think a world-scale conflict is inevitable considering all the circumstances.
나도 너랑 같은 생각이야. 내 생각에도 전체적인 상황을 고려했을 때 세계적인 수준의 충돌을 피하지 못할 것 같아.

Brandon: I mean, think about it. Will they just give up on their nuclear weapons after everything they’ve been through to make them? I don’t wanna think about it but there might be a 3rd World War coming.
생각해 봐. 북한이 핵무기를 고생해서 만들어 놓고는 쉽게 포기하겠냐? 생각하기도 싫지만, 3차 대전 일어나는 건 아닌지 몰라.

I: You know something? There’s a secret behind this that the world doesn’t know about yet. I wanted to tell you about this someday but I guess today is your day. I need to tell you about ‘The Work of Renewing Heaven and Earth.’
그거 알어? 여기에도 아직 세상이 알지 못하는 숨겨진 비밀이 있어. 사실 언젠가는 너한테 이야기해 주려고 했었는데. 아무래도 오늘 너한테 상제님의 천지공사에 대해서 이야기해 줘야겠다.

Brandon: What do you mean? Secret? The work of renewing heaven and earth?
무슨 말이야? 비밀? 천지공사?

I: Sangjenim attained the ultimate enlightenment in 1901, remember? He was 31 years old at the time. From that year on until 1909, the year He returned to the heavenly realm, He conducted the Work of Renewing Heaven and Earth for nine years.
상제님께서 1901년에 대도통을 하셨던 거 기억나? 그때 상제님 성수(聖壽)가 31세셨거든? 그해부터 1909년에 천상으로 어천하시기 전까지 상제님은 9년 동안 천지공사라는 걸 행하셨어.

Brandon: Never heard of the work of renewal before.
천지공사는 처음 들어 보는데?

I: It’s like a schedule of events that Sangjenim prepared in advance on how the world is going to change and progress. All events in the last 100 years of history, no matter how big or how small, went accordingly to Sangjenim’s plan.
상제님께서 이 세상이 어떻게 흘러 나갈지에 대해 미리 준비하신 계획표 같은 거야. 지난 100년간의 모든 역사적 사건들은 얼마나 크든 작든 간에 상제님의 그 계획표대로 흘러오고 있는 거지.

Brandon: Then, is the North Korean nuclear crisis also included in that work of renewal? If He is God, couldn’t He just stop the war from happening?
그럼, 아까 우리가 얘기한 북핵 문제도 그 천지공사 속에 포함되어 있어? 하나님이시라면 전쟁 안 일어나게 하실 수도 있었잖아.　

I: Sangjenim didn’t decide on the destiny of our humanity arbitrarily at His will. Remember what we talked about? There are countless spirits harboring bitterness and grief, even though we can’t see them. Sangjenim told us that only after resolving the bitterness and grief of spirits and humans, we can go forth towards the Later Heaven’s Paradise. But He did this based on the cosmic principles.
상제님께서 마음대로 역사를 결정하시는 건 아니야. 우리가 전에 이야기했었던 것 기억해? 눈에 보이지는 않지만, 원한을 품은 신명들이 굉장히 많다고. 그런 원한이 맺힌 신명과 인간들을 모두 해원시켜야만 앞으로 후천 세상으로 나아갈 수 있다고 하셨거든. 물론 이것도 역시 우주의 법칙을 바탕으로 행하신 거라는 사실!

Brandon: All of the spirits of bitterness and grief must resolve their issues that was built up for thousands of years? Is that even possible?
지난 수수 천 년 동안 쌓인 신명들의 원한까지 전부 다 해결해야만 한다고? 그게 가능해?

I: Sangjenim said He had conducted the Work so seamlessly that it wouldn’t leave even the spirit of a single dead fly to bear grudges. And He gave us 100 years to resolve it. Remember, the last 50,000 years was the time of mutual conflict. Would it be possible for us to live free of sins and immorality if we don’t clear up all the wrong doings and debts we have caused in this time of mutual conflict? That’s why we needed the last 100 years to resolve the bitterness and grief.
상제님께서는, 파리 죽은 귀신 한 마리라도 원망이 붙지 않도록 천지공사를 보셨다고 하셨어. 그리고 모든 원한이 풀어질 때까지 100년이라는 시간을 우리에게 주셨거든. 지난 5만 년 동안 인류가 살아온 시대는 상극의 시대였잖아. 그 상극 시대에 인간이 지은 죄업이 깔끔하게 정리되지 않으면 앞으로 오는 후천 선경도 부도덕과 죄업에서 자유로울 수 없지 않을까? 그래서 원과 한을 풀기 위한 100년의 시간이 필요했던 거지.

Brandon: Wow, this is fun. So what did Sangjenim say about the North Korean nuclear issue and the future of the world?
야. 이거 재미있다. 아니 그러면 그 천지공사에서 상제님은 북핵 문제랑 세계의 미래 대해서는 뭐라고 그러셨어?

I: I know you’re curious but there are some things you should know before we talk about that. 100 years ago, Sangjenim drew a line shaped like the center curve of Taegeuk symbol, and said, “This is the three-eight line,” even before there was the 38th parallel line between the two Koreas. He also said, “I shall plant the stage for the ssireum tournament at Joseon’s thirty-eighth parallel, where I shall launch the sangssireum of the world.”
궁금하겠지만 그걸 얘기하기 전에 기본적으로 알아야 할 게 있어. 상제님께서 100년 전에 태극 형상의 선을 그리시고는 “이것이 삼팔선이니라.”고 하셨어. 38선이 있기도 전에 말이야. 그리고 또 “씨름판대는 조선의 삼팔선에 두고 세계 상씨름판을 붙이리라.”고 하셨거든.

Brandon: Jeseon is the old name of Korea. Then the thirty-eighth parallel line means the armistice line between North and South Korea?
조선은 한국의 옛날 이름이잖아. 그리고 삼팔선이면 혹시 남북한 사이의 휴전선?

I: Exactly! Just think how the touch of God was working behind the Korean War. History of mankind looks differently now, doesn’t it?
맞아! 한국전쟁의 이면에 신의 손길이 작용했다는 걸 생각해 봐. 인류의 역사가 새롭게 보이지 않니?

Brandon: It really does. Then what about the sangssireum of the world?
정말 새롭게 느껴진다. 그럼 세계 상씨름판은 또 뭔데?

I: Ssireum is a traditional Korean sports where two contestants grab the opponent’s belt called satba and bring each other down to the ground. Sangssireum is the final match when the adults match with each other.
씨름은 한국의 전통 스포츠 중의 하나인데, 이렇게 두 명이 서로 샅바라는 걸 붙잡고 상대방을 땅에 넘어뜨리는 경기지. 상씨름은 어른들이 하는 결승 경기를 뜻하고.

Brandon: So the sangssireum of the world means that all the countries in the world are gonna come here in Korea and fight against each other?
그 말은 전 세계가 다 한국에 모여들어서 서로 막 싸운다는 뜻이야?

I: I think it rather means that it’s the most massive and important match where the destiny of the world is at stake. You won’t be able to easily understand it until you learn about the dosu program of the Five Immortals.
그거보다 세계의 운명이 걸린 가장 크고 중요한 승부라는 의미일 거야. 이 상씨름에 대한 말씀은 오선위기 도수를 알지 못하면 쉽게 이해가 안 돼.
