미국의 독립 기념일

July 4 is Independence Day. Another name for Independence Day is the Fourth of July or July Fourth. On this day, Americans remember the first Independence Day on July 4, 1776.

7월 4일은 미국 독립 기념일이다. 이날이 되면 미국인들은 최초의 독립 기념일인 1776년 7월 4일을 기념한다.

The Revolutionary War began in 1775. The 13 colonies were angry with England. They were tired of paying taxes to King George. They wanted freedom to make laws. So in 1776, leaders from the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They talked about freedom from England. Thomas Jefferson wrote a paper. The paper, the Declaration of Independence, said the colonies were “free and independent states.” The leaders signed it on July 4, 1776.

1775년 미국 독립전쟁이 시작되었다. 식민지 13개 주州는 영국에 대항했다. 영국의 세금 징수에 진력이 났던 것이다. 그들은 법을 제정할 수 있는 주권 국가가 되기를 원했다. 1776년, 13개 주의 지도자들은 펜실베이니아 주의 필라델피아에서 영국으로부터의 독립을 논의했다. 토마스 제퍼슨은 독립선언문을 기초하여 식민지가 “자유로운 독립국”임을 선포했다. 1776년 7월 4일에 식민지 대표들은 서명하였다.

People in the 13 colonies were very happy about the Declaration of Independence. They made a lot of noise with bells, drums, and guns. People today like to make noise on Independence Day too.

13개 식민지 주의 미국인들은 독립선언으로 아주 행복했다. 그들은 종과 북, 그리고 권총을 사용해서 많은 축하의 소리를 냈다. 오늘날까지도 독립 기념일에는 이러한 축제 행사가 계속된다.

The Fourth of July is a national holiday. Government offices, banks, and schools close. Most people don’t go to work. Families and friends get together outside for picnics and cookouts. Many Americans fly the flag outside their homes or businesses on July 4.

7월 4일은 국경일이다. 공공기관과 은행은 문을 닫고 학교는 휴교한다. 대부분의 사람들은 출근하지 않는다. 가족과 친구들은 함께 야외로 소풍을 나가서 요리를 해 먹는다. 많은 미국인들은 7월 4일 날 가정이나 기업체 밖에 성조기를 게양한다.

People also go to Fourth of July parades and listen to patriotic music. In the evening when it gets dark, people watch beautiful fireworks. In most states, people cannot buy fireworks because they are dangerous. People can get hurt. So city governments usually have safe fireworks for everyone to enjoy.

사람들은 독립 기념일 퍼레이드에 참가하고 애국심이 넘치는 음악을 듣는다. 저녁에 어두워지면 아름다운 불꽃놀이를 즐긴다. 하지만 폭죽은 다칠 수 있는 위험이 있기 때문에 대부분의 주에서는 구입할 수가 없다. 대신 시청에서 모든 사람들이 즐길 수 있는 안전한 불꽃놀이를 제공한다.

Independence Day isn’t only a day for cookouts, noise, and fireworks. It is also a day to think about freedom. The Declaration of Independence says everyone has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The Declaration of Independence is more than 200 years old, but its ideas are important today.

독립 기념일은 단순히 야외 요리와 소리를 내는 축제일, 혹은 불꽃놀이의 날만은 아니다. 이날은 또한 자유를 생각하는 날이다. 독립 선언은 모든 사람들의 생존권과 자유 및 행복을 추구할 권리를 말한다. 미국 독립 선언은 200년 이상이 되었지만 지금도 그 이념은 중요하다. [출처: Holidays in the U.S.A., 유엔 홈페이지 www.un.org].
