Brandon: Can I ask you something?
나 뭐 하나 물어봐도 돼?

I: What is it?
뭔데?

Brandon: Sangjenim is God so He has the highest authority of all the universe, right? He chose the path of the last 100 years of human history. And He has magical powers and super hero abilities right? Since He’s God.
상제님은 하느님이시니까 우주에서 가장 높은 권능을 지닌 분이시잖아. 지난 100년의 인류 역사의 방향을 정하신 분이시고. 마법 같은 힘과 슈퍼히어로의 능력이 있으시잖아. 하느님이니까.

I: It’s not quite like that but I think I know what you are getting at.
꼭 그런 건 아닌데 네가 뭘 얘기하려는지 알 거 같아.

Brandon: I read in the Dojeon that Sangjenim had to meditate to attain that kind of power. It says that He meditated for 21 days to attain the greatest enlightenment in the history of mankind.
상제님께서 그런 힘을 갖기까지 수행을 통해서 대도통을 하셨다고 도전에 나와 있더라고. 인류 역사상 가장 큰 도통을 하시기 위해 21일 수행을 하셨다고.

I: Yup. He meditated at the Seven Stars Shrine of the Daewonsa Temple for 21 days. For the last seven consecutive days, He meditated without food or water.
맞아. 대원사 칠성각이란 곳에서 21일 동안 수도를 하셨고 마지막 7일 동안에는 식음을 전폐하시고 수도에만 정진하셨지.

Brandon: Then if He is God with such power, why did He have to go through such hardship to achieve enlightenment?
원래부터 그런 힘을 가지신 하느님이신데 왜 굳이 도통을 하시기 위해 그렇게 힘들게 수행을 하신 걸까?

I: It’s a good question. I actually had the same question like, “If He is already God, why did He had to go through all these sufferings and hardship to meditate?” And then I listened to Jongdosanim’s lecture.
음. 정말 좋은 질문인데, 사실 나도 처음에 너와 똑같은 의문을 가졌었거든. 이미 하느님이신데 왜 그토록 힘들게 수도를 하셨을까 하는 궁금증이 들었어. 그런데 종도사님 말씀을 들었지.

Brandon: What did he say?
종도사님께서 어떻게 말씀하셨는데?

I: His Holiness said, Sangjenim’s attainment of enlightenment is a significant event where Sangjenim, as the God who came as a human, opened the ultimate level of enlightenment that can be achieved by humans.
종도사님께서, 상제님의 도통은 하느님이 인간으로 오셔서 인간이 성취할 수 있는 궁극의 도통 경계를 직접 열어 주신 중차대한 사건이라고 말씀해 주셨어.

Brandon: So He demonstrated to us that we can achieve this enlightenment?
상제님께서 우리한테 모범을 보여 주셨다고 이해할 수도 있는 건가?

I: That’s right. Sangjenim said “Cultivate and purify yourself faithfully and you will be able to accomplish anything at will.” But what’s more important is that Sangjenim’s purpose of enlightenment was not to receive prophecies, reach a realization, or to teach human beings with such teachings. Sangjenim attained the greatest enlightenment in history which was in a whole new level than the enlightenment achieved by the Early Heaven’s saints or sages. He did it in order to right the wrongs in human history and to open a new civilization of the cosmic autumn.
그렇지. 상제님께서는 “너희들도 잘 수련하면 모든 일이 마음대로 되리라.”고 하셨거든. 그런데 더 중요한 건 상제님께서 하신 도통의 목적이 단순히 하늘의 계시나 깨달음을 얻어서 인간을 가르치기 위함이 아니란 거야. 상제님께서는 인간 역사의 모든 잘못을 바로잡고 우주 가을철의 새 문명을 여시기 위해 선천 성자들과는 차원이 다른 궁극의 대도통을 하신 거거든.

Brandon: How is His enlightenment different?
그럼 상제님께서 성취한 도통은 어떻게 다른데?

I: Good question, again. Sangjenim told us, “Since ancient times, there has been enlightenment into the principles of heaven and enlightenment into the principles of earth, but there has never been enlightenment into humanity's rightful path. I am the first to attain enlightenment into humanity's rightful path.” The enlightenment into humanity’s rightful path tells the level of Sangjenim’s enlightenment.
이번에도 정말 좋은 질문이야. 상제님께선 이렇게 말씀하셨어. “예로부터 상통천문上通天文과 하달지리下達地理는 있었으나 중통인의中通人義는 없었나니 내가 비로소 인의人義를 통하였노라.” 여기서 ‘중통인의’가 바로 상제님께서 이루신 도통의 경지야.

Brandon: Enlightenment into humanity’s rightful path?
중통인의?

I: He is saying enlightenment into humanity is the highest form of enlightenment. He has shown the most desirable way of life for us, the ones who’re destined to achieve the will and wish of heaven and earth.
인간에 대해 도통하는 것이 가장 높은 도통이라는 말씀이지. 천지의 뜻과 대이상향을 이루는 주인공으로서 우리가 가야 할 가장 바른 길을 상제님께서 열어주신 거야.

Brandon: The ones that achieve the will and wish of heaven and earth?
천지의 뜻과 대이상향을 이루는 주인공?

I: Yes. Think about what the dream of heaven and earth will be. A farmer wishes for the seed to grow to bear abundant fruit, right? Heaven and earth want the same for us. They want us to overcome the time of gaebyeok and to become an enlightened human being of the Later Heaven’s Paradise.
응. 천지의 꿈이 뭘지 한번 생각해 봐. 농부가 씨앗을 심을 때는 그 씨앗이 잘 자라서 알차게 여문 열매가 되길 바라는 마음뿐이잖아, 그렇지? 하늘과 땅도 마찬가지야. 천지의 자녀인 우리 인간이 개벽기를 잘 극복하고 후천선경의 깨달은 인간이 되길 바라고 있어.

Brandon: So overcoming the time of gaebyeok and being enlightened into the dao is the true path for us to go on?
개벽기를 잘 넘기고 도를 깨치는 것이 우리가 걸어가야 할 진정한 삶의 길이란 말이지?

I: That’s it. Our lives have to be enlightening and brightening our spiritual nature with Sangjenim’s dao and the Taeeulju Mantra meditation. We should convey the message of Sangjenim’s incarnation and the cosmic year as well to more people.
바로 그거야. 상제님의 도를 깊이 깨치고 태을주 수행을 통해서 내 안의 신성을 밝히는 삶이 되어야 해. 또한 보다 많은 사람들에게 상제님의 강세와 우주일년에 대해 전해야 하겠지.

Brandon: I don’t exactly understand but one thing for sure is that Sangjenim opened a time period for us to become our own heroes and heroines, right?
