Brandon: Do you believe in God in Jeung San Do?
증산도에서도 신을 믿어?

I: Of course. We believe in Jeung-san Sangjenim, the true God of the universe who came to this world as a human being.
그럼~. 우린 인간으로 오신 우주의 참하느님, 증산 상제님을 신앙해.

Brandon: God who came to the earth as a human? It sounds a lot like he’s the Korean Jesus.
인간으로 오신 하느님이라고? 한국 버전의 예수님으로 들리는데.

I: You’re completely wrong this time, Brandon. There’s something really important you should know. Jesus is not God the Father, but he is the Son who was sent by God the Father. The Father God and the Son are clearly different.
Brandon, 이번엔 완전히 틀렸어. 네가 알아야 할 중요한 사실이 있는데, 예수님은 아버지 하느님이 아니고, 그 하느님이 내려 보내신 성자이셔. 아버지 하나님과 성자는 엄연히 다른 존재라고.

Brandon: That’s not how I learned. Besides, you can’t prove that Jesus isn’t God?
난 그렇게 안 배웠어. 그리고 네가 예수님이 하느님이 아닌지 증명할 수 있어?

I: Did you learn about the Holy Trinity in church?
너 교회에서 삼위일체 배웠어?

Brandon: Yeah. The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, or Holy Spirit. What about it?
응. 아버지, 아들, 그리고 성령이잖아. 그게 어떻다는 거야?

I: That Holy Trinity wasn’t a part of Jesus’s original teaching.
삼위일체는 예수님이 직접 내려 주신 가르침이 아니야.

Brandon: What?
뭐라고?

I: See. In 325 AD, ‘the Council of Nicea’, a Christian council’s meeting, decided they would believe in the Holy Trinity. There were two sides, the Athanasian party claiming the equality of the Father and the Son, and the Arians who argued that the Father and the Son were not equal, and the divinity of the Son was lower than the Father’s. Eventually the Athanasians won and Arius’s claim was declared as a heresy, which created this formula of ‘father =(equals) son’.
봐봐. 325년에 ‘니케아 공의회’라고 불리는 기독교 회의에서 삼위일체를 믿기로 결정한 거야. 그 당시에 두 개 파로 나눠졌는데 한쪽은 성부와 성자는 동등하다고 주장한 아타나시우스파가 있었고, 그 반대로, 성부와 성자가 같지 않고 성자가 성부보다 낮다고 주장한 아리우스파가 있었어. 결국엔 아타나시우스파가 논쟁에서 이기면서 아리우스의 주장은 신성모독으로 규정되었거든. ‘아버지=아들’의 공식이 탄생한 거지.

Brandon: If this is true, why don’t they teach this in church?! All this time I’ve thought that Jesus Christ was the incarnation of God the Father.
이게 사실이라면 왜 교회에서는 이걸 가르치지 않지? 나는 지금껏 예수님이 인간으로 오신 아버지 하느님이라고 알고 있었는데.

I: Saint John said in the Book of Revelation. “I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it.” Just like what St. John described, God the Father is God in the human form. He’s not a being that doesn’t have a shape or form.
사도 요한도 계시록에서 말하잖아. “백보좌와 그 위에 앉으신 분을 보았다”라고. 사도 요한이 말한 것처럼, 성부 하느님은 인간의 모습을 하고 계신 하느님이란 거야. 그냥 실체가 없는 존재가 아니란 거야.

Brandon: Wow, I feel so confused. You’re telling me that I've learned the wrong things.
이거 점점 머리가 복잡해지는데. 그러니까 네 말은 내가 틀린 내용을 배웠다는 거잖아.

I: Some parts of Christian theology obscured the truth about God. God is the ruling God who presides the universe by the principle of birth, growth, harvest and rest. He’s the highest ruler of the universe, and Korean people called him ‘Sangjenim’ from ancient times.
기독교 신학의 몇 가지 부분들이 하느님에 대한 진실을 흐려 놓았어. 사실 하느님은 생장염장의 법칙을 맡아 이 우주를 다스리는 분이야. 우주의 가장 높은 통치자이신 거지. 한국인들은 고대로부터 그분을 ‘상제님’이라고 불렀어.

Brandon: Then what about Jesus?
그러면 예수님은?

I: He was a sage indeed, just like Shakyamuni and Confucius, and all of them had been sent to this world by Sangjenim. They came on a mission to edify peoples on earth, but they had to fail to give us a complete salvation. Just look at all the problems of the world today.
물론 예수님은 공자, 석가와 마찬가지로 상제님이 이 땅에 내려 보내신 성자야. 우주의 여름철에 인류를 교화하는 사명을 맡아 세상에 오신 분들이지. 하지만 그분들은 우릴 완전히 구원하는 데 실패할 수밖에 없었어. 지금 세상에 일어나는 모든 문제들만 봐도 그렇지.

Brandon: So someone else will have to come again and deliver us.
그럼 앞으로 다른 누군가가 와서 구원을 해 주셔야겠네.

I: Not ‘will have to come’, but ‘already came’. What does it say in the Bible? God said to St. John, “I am the Alpha and the Omega... who is, who was, and who is to come.” The God who told us that he would come already has come to this world. He is Jeung-san Sangjenim.
‘오실 것이다’가 아니고, ‘이미 오셨다’거든. 성경책에도 있잖아. 사도 요한에게 “나는 알파요 오메가라. 이제도 있고 전에도 있었고 장차 올 자다.”라고 하나님이 말씀하셨지. “장차 오겠다.”고 하셨던 그 하느님이 이미 이 땅에 오셨고 그 분이 바로 증산 상제님이셔.
