현충일

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers.

전몰장병 추모일은 군 복무 중에 전사한 장병들을 기리기 위한 미국의 연방 공휴일이다. 현재 매년 5월의 마지막 월요일인 이날은 1868년 미국 남북전쟁 후에 데코레이션 데이Decoration Day에서 유래했다. 그 당시 일리노이 주 디케이터에서 창설된 남북전쟁 참전용사 연합 조직인 "남북전쟁 종군 용사회"는 온 국민들이 남북전쟁에서 전사한 장병들의 무덤을 꽃으로 장식하는 날로 전몰장병 기념일을 제정했다.

By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. It marks the start of the unofficial summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.

남북이 서로 전통적인 휴일을 주장하면서 각기 다른 날을 기념하다가 20세기 무렵에 전몰장병 추모일로 통합되어, 마침내 군 복무 중에 전사한 모든 미국인들을 기리는 날이 되었다. 전몰장병 추모일을 계기로 비공식적인 여름 휴가 시즌이 시작된다. 반면에 9월 첫째 월요일인 노동절은 여름 휴가철의 막바지이다.

Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.

Annual Decoration Days for particular cemeteries are held on a Sunday in late spring or early summer in some rural areas of the American South, notably in the mountain areas.

In cases involving a family graveyard where remote ancestors as well as those who were deceased more recently are buried, this may take on the character of an extended family reunion to which some people travel hundreds of miles.

It is believed that this practice began before the American Civil War and thus may reflect the real origin of the “memorial day” idea.

사람들은 정해진 날에 모여서 무덤에 꽃을 바치고 일가 친지들과 재회를 한다. 보통 추도식이 열린다. 그리고 마치 소풍 나온 것처럼 “현장 식사”를 한다. “현장 식사”는 교회에서 여러 사람들이 각자 음식을 조금씩 가져와서 나눠 먹는 식사에 대한 전통적인 용어이다. 이러한 관습은 미국 남북전쟁 이전에 시작했던 것으로 보이는데, “전몰장병 추모일” 아이디어에 대한 기원을 나타내는 듯하다.

Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.

전몰장병 추모일을 재향 군인의 날과 혼동해서는 안 된다. 전몰장병 추모일은 군 복무 중에 전사한 남녀 군인들을 추모하는 날이다. 재향 군인의 날은 미국의 모든 퇴역군인들의 군 복무를 경축한다.
