1주의 말씀 : 인간은 우주존재의 목적

The Human Being Is the Purpose of the Universe

In the beginning, (태초에)
the universe came into being (우주가 생겨났다)
for the human being. (인간을 위해 )
The universe exists for humans (우주는 인간을 위해 존재한다)
—this is Jeung San Do’s cosmology. (이것이 증산도의 우주론이다.)
The ultimate purpose of humanity (인류의 궁극 목적은 )
is to be reborn (새로 태어나는 것이다)
as mature, enlightened beings(성숙한, 깨우친 존재로)
—as the fruit of humanity—(인류의 열매로)
under the destiny of cosmic autumn. (우주 가을의 운 아래서 )
In other words, (다시 말해)
humanity lives to one day enter (인류는 언젠가 들어가기 위해 산다)
the world of cosmic autumn. (우주 가을의 세계로)
Born with an innate desire (타고난 소망을 갖고 태어난)

Reading Point

1. The ultimate purpose of humanity is to be reborn as mature, enlightened beings.
인류의 궁극 목적은 성숙한, 깨우친 존재로 새로 태어나는 것이다.

이 문장을 이해하는 핵심은 to be reborn 입니다. to부정사가 명사처럼 쓰여 보어(주어를 보충 설명)의 역할을 하고 있는 것입니다. 예를 들어 My hobby is to read books.(내 취미는 책 읽는 것이다.)라는 문장을 보세요. My hobby = to read books. 이런 관계가 되는 것입니다.

인류는 언젠가 우주 가을의 세계로 들어가기 위해 산다.

주어(인간은) + 동사(산다) + 부사(언젠가 우주 가을 세계로 들어가기 위하여)

이번에는 to부정사가 목적(“~하기 위해”)을 나타내는 부사적용법으로 쓰이고 있습니다. to부정사는 동사의 행동의 이유를 부연 설명하는 부사의 역할을 합니다. 예를 들어 “나는 거기에 갔다”는 I went there. 인데 “나는 그를 보러 거기에 갔다.”고 말하려면 “to see him”을 붙여 “I went there to see him.” 라고 하는 것입니다.

3. Born with an innate desire to seek out truth, humanity searches for God.
진리를 찾겠다는 본유의 소망을 갖고 태어난 인류는 하느님을 찾는다.

분사구문(진리를 찾겠다는 본래적 소망을 갖고 태어난)

주어(인류는) + 동사(찾는다) +목적어(신을) = 주절

분사구문은 시간(when), 이유(because), 조건(if), 연속동작 등을 나타내는 접속사가 생략되어 간단한 형태를 띠고 부사절 역할을 하는 구문입니다. 원래 접속사와 주어, 동사를 모두 갖춘 부사절 “Because humanity are born with an innate desire to seek out truth, (인간은 진리를 찾겠다는 본래적 소망을 갖고 태어났기 때문에)”에서 접속사와 주어를 생략해 “Born with an innate desire to seek out truth” 라는 분사구문으로 간단히 줄여 준 것이죠.

번역

태초에 이 우주가 인생을 위해서 열렸다. 인간을 위해 존재하는 우주, 이것이 우리 증산도 우주론이다. 인간 삶의 궁극 목적은, 이 가을천지의 운을 만나 성숙한 인간으로 재탄생하는 것, 열매인간으로 새롭게 탄생하는 것이다. 한마디로 가을 천지에 들어가기 위해 사는 것이다. 진리를 찾기 위해 태어난 인간 삶의 궁극 목적은, 인간 역사에서 우주의 하나님을 만나는 것이다. 인간으로 오신 상제님의 진리를 만나는 것이다.

3주의 말씀 : 원시반본

Seeking Out the Beginning and Returning to the Origin

‘Seeking out the beginning (처음을 찾아서)
and returning to the origin’ (근원으로 돌아가는 것은)
is a universal principle (보편적 이치이다)
of the cosmic autumn. (우주의 가을의)
It signifies (그것은 의미한다)
the return of life to its origin (생명이 근원으로 돌아가는 것을 )
in accordance with the principle (이치에 따라 )
of autumn’s maturation and unification. (가을의 성숙과 통일의 )
This process is typified by the cycle (이 과정은 주기에 의해 상징된다 )
in which seeds sown in spring (봄에 씨가 뿌려져)
grow into flora in summer (여름에 식물로 자라나고)
and beget new seeds in autumn, (가을에 새 씨앗을 낳아)
thereby recovering their original state. (원래 모습을 회복하는 것)
In the human context, (인간에게 있어 )
returning to the origin encompasses (근원으로 돌아간다는 것은 포함한다)
a conscious awareness of, (깨어있는 자각)
and effort to recover, (그리고 회복하려는 노력)
one’s self, ancestry, history, and spirituality (참다운 나, 조상, 역사, 그리고 영성을 )

동명사는 동사가 ~ing를 만나서 명사의 역할을 하게 되는 것을 말합니다. 명사라는 것은 그 역할이 주어, 목적어, 보어죠. “~하는 것”이라고 번역하시면 됩니다. 동명사 주어를 3인칭 단수로 취급해서 동사 is를 쓴 것을 주의해서 보세요.

주어인 ‘Seeds sown in spring’을 살펴봅시다. 여기서 sown은 동사 sow(씨를 뿌리다)의 과거분사입니다(sow-sowed-sown). 동명사는 명사지만, 분사는 형용사로 명사를 꾸며주죠. 현재분사가 능동적 표현인데 비해(예: a sleeping baby 잠자는 아기), 과거분사는 누군가에 의해 행해진 수동적 표현입니다(씨앗은 누가 뿌려 주어야 하니까요). 그리고 분사구문이 두 단어 이상 길어지면 뒤에서 앞의 명사를 꾸며줍니다.
예) ① a broken window (깨진 창문)
② a window broken into pieces (조각조각 깨진 창문)

이 문장에서 동사 ‘include(포함하다)’는 동명사구 ‘reaching fruition(열매를 맺는 것)’을 목적어로 가집니다. 그런데 reaching fruition을 하는 주체는 문장의 주어와 달리 ‘선천의 문화와 문명’이 됩니다. 이것을 동명사의 의미상의 주어라고 하죠.

번역

원시반본은 우주 가을의 보편적 원리이다. 만물이 성숙, 통일하는 가을의 정신에 따라 모든 생명이 그 근원으로 돌아가는 것을 의미한다. 봄에 씨를 뿌려 여름에는 꽃이 피고 가을에 가서는 열매를 맺는 자연의 순환 원리가 바로 원시반본이다. 인간에게 있어 원시반본은 성숙을 위한 과정으로서, 진정한 자신을 찾는 일에서부터 본인의 조상과 민족의 뿌리를 찾고 영성을 회복하는 것까지를 모두 아우른다. 선천의 다양한 문화와 문명권이 후천에 하나로 결실, 통합되는 것 또한 원시반본의 이치에 따른 것이다.

4주의 말씀 : 천지인이 병들었다

All the world is afflicted by a monstrous disease

Humanity go through suffering and death not knowing the true path of dao.
(인간은 참된 도의 길을 알지 못한 채 고통과 죽음을 겪습니다. )

If you do not know this, you will depart this world not knowing why you were here.
(여러분이 이것을 모른다면 여러분이 왜 이 세상에 왔는지 모른 채 세상을 떠나고 말 것입니다. )

Not knowing what to do next in your life can be confusing and a painful experience.
(인생에서 이제 무엇을 해야 할지 모르는 것은 혼란스럽고 고통스러운 경험일 수 있습니다. )

3. This is why + 주어 + 동사
: ~이것이 ~가 ~하는 이유입니다.

This is why Sangjenim had to come to Earth as a human being.
(이것이 상제님께서 인간으로 세상에 오셔야만 했던 이유입니다. )

This is why the resolving of bitterness and grief is the most important factor in entering the Cosmic Autumn.
(이것이 해원이 우주의 가을에 들어가기 위한 가장 중요한 요인인 이유입니다. )

This is why you must serve your ancestors well.
(이것이 여러분이 조상을 잘 섬겨야 하는 이유입니다. )

What is the source of all the pain and suffering in this world?

A: The heaven, earth and humanity are all suffering from illness.
B: Would you elaborate on that?

A: According to the Dojeon, the heaven is filled with spirits of bitterness and grief. The axis of Earth is tilted, which creates imbalance. #\\And humanity go through suffering and death not knowing the true path of dao.
B: This is why Sangjenim had to come to Earth as a human being!

A: 하늘과 땅과 인간이 모두 병들었습니다.
B: 좀 더 자세히 설명해 주겠어요?

A: 『도전』에 따르면 하늘은 원한 맺힌 신명들로 가득 차 있어요. 지축은 기울어져서 불균형을 만들죠. 또 인간은 참 진리의 길을 알지 못한 채 고통과 죽음을 맞고요.
