I : I went to the dojang with my parents to attend an ancestral offering chiseong.
부모님이랑 도장에 가서 조상보은치성에 참여했어.

Edgar: Ancestral offering chiseong? What's that?
조상보은치성? 그게 뭔데?

I : It’s a ritual we do for our ancestral spirits in Jeung San Do with lots of food offerings for them.
우리 증산도에서는 조상신명님들을 위해서 치성을 모셔. 여러 음식들을 차려서 말이야.

Edgar: I don't get it. What are ancestral spirits?
네가 하는 얘기를 잘 이해하지 못하겠어. 조상신명님들이 뭔데?

I : Ancestral spirits are our ancestors who once lived in this world as human beings. They passed away and became spiritual beings.
조상신명들은 한때 인간으로서 이 세상에 살다가 가신 우리 조상님이셔. 돌아가시고 나서 신명이 된 거지.

Edgar: So, where are they now? At your dojang?
그럼 그분들은 지금 어디 계셔? 너희 도장에?

I : Of course not! They live in the world of the spirits. It’s called spirit realm.
당연히 아니지! 신명들의 세계에 살고 계셔. 그곳을 신도세계라고 해.

Edgar: I've never thought about those things, you know? Ancestors or spirits...So you’re saying that they really exist?
나는 한 번도 생각을 안 해 봤거든. 조상님이라든가 신명들이라든가. 그럼 네가 하는 말은 그 신명들이 진짜로 존재한다는 거야?

I : Yeah. they really do exist. Scientists found that there’s an “inner person” within our bodies. And it's usually called the ‘astral body’.
그럼. 신명들은 실제로 존재해. 과학자들도 우리 몸속에 “속사람”이란 게 있단 걸 밝혀냈대. 그걸 보통 영체라고 불러.



Edgar: Then how come I haven’t seen an astral body in my entire 12-year life?
그럼 왜 나는 내 12년 인생에서 그 영체란 걸 단 한 번도 못 봤을까?

I : You can't. It's not like the physical body. But everybody has it.
안 보여. 영체는 육체랑 다르거든. 그렇지만 모든 사람이 가지고 있어.

Edgar: What? You mean that everyone has physical body and astral body?
뭐라고? 모든 사람이 육체랑 영체를 갖고 있다는 거야?

I : Exactly! And when you practice meditation everyday, you can open your spiritual eye and see those spirits. In fact, I see one behind you!
정확해! 그리고 네가 매일 수행을 하면 영안을 열고 그 신명들을 볼 수 있어. 사실 네 뒤에도 하나 있다!

Edgar: OMG! That scared me. Don’t do that. I don't want to see spirits.
하나님 맙소사! 깜짝 놀랐어. 나 겁주지 마. 나는 신명 안 볼래.

I : Hahaha. There's nothing to be scared of, Edgar. Spirits are just like human beings without physical body. Besides, you'll become a spirit, too, after you die.
하하하. 겁낼 거 없다고. 신명은 단지 육체가 없는 사람과 같아. 그리고 어차피 너도 죽으면 신명이 될 건데 뭘.

Edgar: I know it’s Halloween but seriously, you should stop.
