1주의 말씀 : 천지공사란 무엇인가?

What Is the Work of Renewing Heaven and Earth?

In all countries and in all times (동서고금에)
during the Early Heaven, (선천에는)
not a single person passed through this world (한 사람도 세상을 살다 가지 못했다)
without incurring bitterness and grief. (원한을 맺지 않고는)
Spirits harboring bitterness and grief (원한 맺힌 신명들이)
now fill heaven and earth. (지금 천지에 가득 찼다.)
In order to fundamentally correct this world (세상을 근본적으로 바로잡으려면)
so as to build a magnificent new world, (좋은 새 세상을 만들기 위해)
the spirits must first be resolved of their bitterness and grief. (신명들이 먼저 원한이 풀려야 한다.)
And so, Sangjenim conducted works of renewal (그래서 상제님께서 천지공사를 보셨다)
for resolving the bitterness and grief of all spirits. (신명의 원한을 풀어 주는)
Sangjenim assembled all the spirits (상제님께서 모든 신명들을 불러 모아)
and reorganized the spirit realm; (신명세계를 새로 조직하여)
planned the programs, the schedule, the timetable (프로그램, 시간표, 이정표를 짜서)
for the tides of the world; (세상 둥글어 갈)
and compelled the world to turn (이 세상이 그렇게만 둥글어 가도록 만드셨다.)
in accordance with this timetable. (이 시간표에 따라서)
This, Sangjenim named Cheonjigongsa: (상제님이 그것을 ‘천지공사(天地公事)’라고 하셨다.)

Reading Points

1. 부정어 Not a ~ 주어로 쓰일 때

Not a single person passed through this world without incurring bitterness and grief.
한 사람도 원한을 맺지 않고는 세상을 살다 가지 못했다.

부정어 not a를 주어로 쓰면 부정적인 생각을 강조할 수 있습니다. (“어떤~도 ~않다”는 뜻) not a 대신 no, none (of), nobody, no one 등으로 바꿔 쓸 수 있습니다.

Not a (single) flower can be seen. (꽃이 하나도 안 보여.)
=No flower can be seen.
=None of the flowers can be seen.

2. 수동태 관용어 be resolved of : ~가 해결되다

The spirits must first #be resolved of# their bitterness and grief.
먼저 신명들의 원한이 풀려야 한다.

능동태란 주어가 해당 동사의 일을 하는 것이고, 수동태란 주어가 해당 동사의 일을 당하는 것으로 보통 Be동사 + P.P(과거분사)형태입니다. 수동태 뒤에는 보통 by + 목적격이 나오는 것이 기본이지만, 다른 전치사를 사용할 때가 아주 많습니다.

예) be known for : ~(이유)로 유명하다
be pleased with : ~으로 기뻐하다
be assigned to : ~에 배정되다
be surprised at : ~에 놀라다
be based on : ~에 기반하다, 근거하다
be convinced of : ~을 확신하다

3. compel + 목적어 + to부정사 : 강제하다, (필요에 따라) ~하게 만들다

Sangjenim compelled the world to turn in accordance with the timetable.
상제님께서 이 세상이 그 시간표에 따라서 둥글어 가도록 만드셨다.

compel은 “(상황, 규칙 등에 의해) 뭔가를 하게 만들다”는 뜻으로, 뒤에 목적어가 나오고 목적보어로 to부정사를 쓰는 5형식 동사입니다.

목적보어로 to부정사를 취하는 동사:
force(~하도록 강요하다), allow(~하도록 허락하다), ask(~하도록 요청하다), require(~하도록 요구하다), encourage(~하도록 격려하다), instruct(~하도록 지시하다), intend(~하도록 의도하다) 등.

번역

선천에는 동서고금에 사람 뚜겁을 쓰고 온 사람 쳐 놓고 원한을 맺지 않고 간 사람은 한 사람도 없다. 원한 맺힌 신명들이 천지에 가득 찼다. 세상을 근본적으로 바로잡고 좋은 세상을 만들려면, 신명들을 먼저 해원(解寃)을 시켜주어야 한다. 그래서 상제님께서 신명 해원공사를 보셨다. 상제님께서 그 신명들을 전부 끌어 모아서 신명세계를 조직하셨다. 그리하여 세상 둥글어 갈 프로그램, 시간표, 이정표를 짜서, 이 세상이 그렇게만 둥글어 가도록 만드셨다. 상제님께서 그것을 이름하여 ‘천지공사(天地公事)’라고 하셨다. (태상종도사님 말씀)

2주의 말씀 : 신명 해원 공사

Works of Renewal for the Resolution of Bitterness and Grief

1. very few + 셀 수 있는 명사 : ~가 거의 없는

Very few people accomplish all that they have dreamed of in their lifetime.
자신들이 인생에서 원했던 모든 것들을 이루는 사람은 거의 없다.

Very few people can have a completely clear head while they sit.
앉아서 생각을 완전히 비울 수 있는 사람은 거의 없다.

There are very few words to describe the misery.
그 고통을 말로 설명할 수 없다.

2. even after : 심지어 ~ 이후에도

Your spiritual body continues to hold the same grudge even after our physical body dies.
육체가 죽은 뒤에도 영체는 똑같은 원한을 품으며 살아간다.

Even after people become spirits, they continue to cultivate themselves.
사람은 죽어 신명神明이 되어서도 공부를 계속한다.

Sitting can be difficult at times, even after years of meditation.
명상을 수년 동안 했어도 앉는 것이 힘들 때가 있습니다.

3. in order not to : ~하지 않기 위하여

Sangjenim must have worked with the spiritual beings in order not to# create more bitterness and grief.
원한을 더 짓지 않도록 상제님께서 신명들과 함께 일하신 것임에 틀림없다.

They woke up early in order not to be late.
그들은 늦지 않으려고 일찍 일어났다.

We read history in order not to have to repeat it.
우리는 잘못을 되풀이하지 않기 위해 역사책을 읽는다.

4. get to + 동사원형: ~하게 되다

All the spirits get to fulfill their desires as these historical events unfold.
이러한 역사적 사건이 펼쳐지면서 모든 신명들이 한을 풀게 됩니다.

서로 인사나 합시다.

I was lucky to get to see the movie.
그 영화를 볼 수 있게 되어 다행이었다.

Dialogue 1

A: Everyone dies with bitterness and grief because #very few people accomplish all that they have dreamed of in their lifetime.# That's why heaven and earth are now crowded with the spirits holding grudges in their heart.
B: But isn’t it over when you die? I can’t believe humans don’t let go of this bitterness and grief stuff even after we die.

A: Well, whether you believe it or not, #your spiritual body continues to exist and continues to hold the same grudge even after our physical body dies.# Sangjenim performed the work of renewal to resolve all the bitterness and grief of humans and spirits to build the Later Heaven's paradise on earth.

A: 모든 사람이 원한을 맺고 죽는데요, 이유는 자신들이 인생에서 원했던 모든 것들을 이루는 사람은 거의 없기 때문입니다. 이것 때문에 천지가 이런 원한을 마음에 품고 사는 신명들로 가득 찬 것입니다.
B: 하지만 죽으면 다 끝나는 게 아닌가요? 저는 사람이 죽고 난 뒤에도 이 원과 한이라는 것을 내려놓지 못한다는 걸 믿지 못하겠어요.

A: 당신이 믿든 안 믿든 간에 육체가 죽은 뒤에도 영체는 살아있고요, 똑같은 원한을 품으며 살아갑니다. 상제님께서는 후천의 선경을 지상에 건설하시기 위해 천지공사로써 인간과 신명의 모든 원한을 풀어 주셨습니다.

A: Sangjenim assembled all the spirits and reorganized the spirit realm. The spirits, who had been prevented by others from fulfilling their wishes during their human lifetimes, would now be able to fulfill their wishes through Sangjenim’s work of renewal.
B: #He must have worked with the spiritual beings in order not to create more bitterness and grief.#

A: Exactly. Sangjenim performed his work of renewal by drawing upon deliberations of all the spirits of heaven and earth in a fair and impartial way. This work of renewal has been materializing as events in history for the last 100 years. #All the spirits get to fulfill their desires as these historical events unfold.#

A: 상제님께서 신명들을 전부 끌어모아서 신명세계를 조직하셨습니다. 살아생전에 타의에 의해서 꿈을 못다 이루었던 만고의 뭇 신명들이 상제님 천지공사를 통해서 그들의 꿈을 성취하게 됩니다.
B: 원한을 더 짓지 않도록 신명들과 함께 일하신 거군요.

A: 그렇습니다. 상제님께서는 모든 신명들의 공의에 의해 아주 지공무사하게 공사를 보셨습니다. 천지공사는 지난 100년간 역사적 사건으로 표출되어 왔습니다. 이러한 역사적 사건이 펼쳐지면서 모든 신명들이 한을 풀게 되는 것입니다.

Uniting Heaven, Earth, and Humanity

who had lived since the beginning of human history. (인류 역사가 시작되었을 때부터 살았던)

Reading Points

1. since : ~이래로

the spirits of people who had lived

since the beginning of human history.

since는 #since 다음에 언급된 시점 이래로 일어난 일을 설명할 때# 사용합니다. 참고로 since 뒤에는 특정 시간을 쓰지만, for 뒤에는 기간을 써서 “~동안”이라는 뜻이 됩니다.

이 경우 since나 for는 현재완료형이나 과거완료형 동사와 함께 쓰이는데, 현재완료는 과거 어느 시점부터 현재까지 일을 나타내고, #과거완료는 대과거부터 과거 시점까지의 경험, 결과, 완료, 계속을 나타냅니다.# 본문 문장에서는 인류 역사가 시작된 시점(대과거)부터 상제님께서 조화정부를 구성하신 때(과거)까지 살았던 사람들을 말하기 때문에 과거완료가 사용되었습니다.

The Union of Spirits and Humans

1. What 관계대명사절이 주어로 쓰일 때

What materializes in the human world is like a carbon copy of the original.
인간 세상에 표출되는 것은 원본의 복사판이다.

What you say is true.
네가 말하는 것은 진실이다.

What makes a good life is relationship.
좋은 삶을 만드는 것은 관계다.

2. everything that + 동사 : ~하는 모든 것

Everything that went on for the last 100 years was designed by Sangjeinm.
지난 100년 동안 벌어진 모든 일들이 상제님께서 계획하신 것이다.

Everything that has been happening around the world are the manifestation of Sangjenim’s work of renewal.
전 세계에서 일어나고 있는 모든 일들은 상제님 공사가 실현된 것이다.

Everything that exists has a cause of its existence.

A: Yes. Everything that’s been happening around the world are the result of the manifestation of Sangjenim’s work of renewal. It perfectly manifests in the human world without even the slightest discrepancy.
