5 That night, as Gong-u was burning incense to keep away mosquitoes, 6 he confessed to Sangjenim, “Teacher, I believe it nothing short of a miracle that I have met You in the midst of my forty-nine days of prayer.”

7 Sangjenim revealed to Gyeong-seok and Gong-u, “Those destined to meet have now met, so it is time for the spirits of perfect communion to come forth. 8 No one—not My parent, sibling, wife, or child—can fathom My work. I have journeyed the world starting from the canopy tower in the nation of great law in the West.

9 “An Eastern Learning mantra says, ‘Si-cheon-ju Jo-hwa-jeong’—this speaks of My work. 10 I journeyed throughout the three realms, surveying them, to address the turmoil in the spirit realm and human world by establishing the Government of Creation-Transformation and renewing heaven and earth. 11 I finally came to your Eastern land to save its people first from the abyss of suffering and then to resolve all the bitterness and grief that has accumulated throughout the ages. 12 Those who follow Me shall gain eternal bliss in the Paradise of Immortality. My dao is the true Eastern Learning.”

5 이날 밤 공우가 밤새 향을 피워 모기를 쫓다가 상제님께 아뢰기를
6 “제가 지금 49일 기도중에 있는데 선생님을 뵙게 된 것이 ‘기적이 아닌가’ 합니다.” 하거늘
7 상제님께서 경석과 공우에게 이르시기를 “이제 만날 사람 만났으니 통정신(通情神)이 나오니라.
8 나의 일은 비록 부모형제 처자라도 모르는 일이니 나는 서양 대법국 천개탑 천하대순이라.
9 동학주문에 ‘시천주조화정(侍天主造化定)’이라 하였으니 나의 일을 이름이라.
10 내가 천지를 개벽하고 조화정부를 열어 인간과 하늘의 혼란을 바로잡으려고 삼계를 둘러 살피다가
11 너의 동토에 그친 것은 잔피(殘疲)에 빠진 민중을 먼저 건져 만고에 쌓인 원한을 풀어 주려 함이니
12 나를 믿는 자는 무궁한 행복을 얻어 선경의 낙을 누리리니 이것이 참 동학이라.

In 1894, a series of armed rebellion began in Korea. Aggravated peasants and followers of the Donghak(Eastern Learning) revolted against the exploitation of the yangban (aristocrats) and foreign imperial powers. It is the Donghak Peasant Revolution. It spread the news of the coming gaebyeok until its fall in 1895, causing the death of 300,000 people. By 1900, most of the countries in Asia and Africa became colonized by the Western powers. In the debris of such bloodshed and oppression, Jeung San Do was born in 1901 in search of a new way of life.

1894년 갑오년의 동학혁명은 30만 명의 많은 사상자를 내며 기존의 억압의 문화, 제국의 문화에 저항을 하며 새로운 시대의 도래를 부르짖었다. 개벽의 세계를 선언한 것이다. 1900년, 그때 이미 서양의 제국들은 동양과 아프리카 등에 세력편성을 완료하였다. 이러한 살육과 억압의 잿더미에서 새로운 삶의 원리에 대한 모색의 과정을 통하여 도출된 것이 바로 증산도이다. (종도사님 말씀)

2주의 말씀 : 신미년강세

The Affairs of Heaven Were Entrusted to the Imperial Court of Heaven *Dojeon 2:73

1 “None can truly understand My work—not My parents, sibling, child, or wife. I am a sojourner in the world who descended to the canopy tower in the nation of great law in the West.

2 “Eastern Learning’s mantra says, ‘Si-cheon-ju Jo-hwa-jeong.’ 3 Spirits in heaven and earth entreated Me to address the deep suffering of humans and spirits, 4 so, entrusting the affairs of heaven to the officials of heaven’s court, 5 I descended to the canopy tower in the West, traveled the world, and observed the woes and joys of humanity.

6 “I have an affinity with this Eastern land, so I eventually journeyed here and resided at the Maitreya statue of Geumsansa Temple for thirty years. While there, I bestowed upon Choe Su-un a heavenly mandate and spirit teaching. 7 However, the Joseon royal court executed Su-un, so I Myself incarnated into the world in 1871, the eighth year from 1864, in accordance with the eight trigrams.”

천조(天朝)를 맡기시고 강세하심

1 나의 일은 비록 부모 형제 처자라도 알 수가 없나니 나는 서양대법국 천개탑 천하대순이로다.
2 동학주문에 ‘시천주 조화정(侍天主造化定)’이라 하였으니
3 천지간의 모든 신명들이 인류와 신명계의 겁액을 나에게 탄원하므로
4 내가 천조(天朝)의 대신(大臣)들에게 ‘하늘의 정사(政事)를 섭리하라.’고 맡기고
5 서양 천개탑에 내려와서 천하를 둘러보고 만방의 억조창생의 편안함과 근심걱정을 살피고
6 너의 동토(東土)에 인연이 있는 고로 이 동방에 와서 30년 동안 금산사 미륵전에 머물면서 최제우에게 천명(天命)과 신교(神敎)를 내려 주었더니
7 조선 조정이 제우를 죽였으므로 내가 팔괘갑자(八卦甲子)에 응하여 신미(辛未：道紀 1, 1871)년에 이 세상에 내려왔노라.

용用공부 익힘자료

Si-cheon-ju quite simply means “Serving God”; Jo-hwa-jeong means “determining creation-transformation”; and Yeong-se-bul-mang Man-sa-ji means, “I shall never forget throughout the fifty-thousand years of the Later Heaven, throughout all eternity, His infinite grace of building a magnificent world by ushering in the culture of mansaji (“omniscience”).” The mantra will continue to be chanted throughout the fifty-thousand years of the Later Heaven. However, this was the extent of what Choe Su-un revealed. He could not establish a true dharma to raise up a great dao. Hence, he failed to fulfill his destined mandate. So it was that Sangjenim finally withdrew Choe Su-un’s heavenly mandate and spirit teaching in 1864. And in 1871, eight years after that, Sangjenim personally incarnated into this world.

“시천주(侍天主)” 하나님을 모시고, “조화정(造化定)” 조화를 정하니, “영세불망만사지(永世不忘萬事知)” 만사지문화를 개창해서 좋은 세상 만들어주는 은총을 후천 5만 년 영세토록 잊지 못한다는 말이다. 이 주문은 후천 5만 년 동안 유효하다. 그러나 최수운은 그것만 밝혀 놓았지, 참법을 지어내어 대도를 세우지는 못했다. 자기 사명을 다하지 못했다는 말이다. 해서 결국 상제님께서 최수운의 도통기운을 거두시고, 그 후 8년 만인 신미(辛未 : 1871)년에 친히 이 세상에 오시게 되었다. (태상종도사님 말씀)

3주의 말씀 : 선천성자를 내려보내심

Sangjenim Sent Confucius, Shakyamuni, and Jesus to the World *Dojeon 2:43

1 Sangjenim one day said to the disciples, “Those who believe in Jesus await the second coming of Jesus, 2 those who believe in Buddha await the coming of Maitreya Buddha, 3 and those who believe in Eastern Learning await the rebirth of Choe Su-un. 4 But whoever this person proves to be, when that one person comes, all will proclaim him their master and follow him.”
6 Sangjenim then revealed, “It is I who sent Confucius, Shakyamuni, and Jesus to the world, to serve in My work.”

공자 석가 예수를 내려 보내심

1 하루는 성도들에게 일러 말씀하시기를 “예수를 믿는 사람은 예수의 재림을 기다리고
2 불교도는 미륵의 출세를 기다리고
3 동학 신도는 최수운의 갱생을 기다리나니
4 ‘누구든지 한 사람만 오면 각기 저의 스승이라’ 하여 따르리라.” 하시고
6 또 말씀하시기를 “공자, 석가, 예수는 내가 쓰기 위해 내려 보냈느니라.” 하시니라.

Shakyamuni Buddha said, ‘Three thousand years later, Maitreya Buddha will come.’ In the West, Jesus proclaimed word of God the Father. Jesus said, “I am from Him, and He sent Me.” Jesus also proclaimed the coming of God the Father. It would not be himself but God the Father who would come to the world. John the Apostle proclaimed the coming of God on the great white throne. In the East, Confucianism and Daoism worshipped Okhwang-Sangje (“Jade Emperor of Heaven”), or Sangje. Expressions varied with religious cultures, but they all spoke of the True God. Heaven and earth are the one and only. Likewise, God the Ruler―the Supreme Governor―is the one and only.

석가모니 부처가 “3천년 후는 미륵이 온다.” 미륵. “미륵불이 온다.” 고 했다. 서교에서는 예수가 “아버지 하나님이 계신다. 나도 아버지 하나님이 보내서 왔다. 그 아버지 하나님이 오신다”고 했다. “내가 아닌 아버지 하나님이 오신다”고 했다. 사도 요한은 백보좌 하나님이 오신다고 했다. 백보좌 하나님. 동양의 유가, 도가에서는 옥황상제, 상제라고 했다. 문화권에 따라서 표현이 다를 뿐이지 참하나님을 말한 것이다. 천지가 하나인데 주재자, 통치자도 한 분이 오실 것 아닌가.

Sangjenim (“Emperor Above” or “Supreme God”) is God the Ruler of the Universe. As the Supreme Governor of the Universe, Sangjenim rules over everything with His commands. Without Sangjenim’s advent into the world at the approach of cosmic autumn, none of the spirits of people who had lived throughout history could be controlled. In other words, only the True God could rule over all the spirits of those who had once lived as humans. Sangjenim―God the Ruler―incarnated into this world and gathered the essence of all the cultures of the Early Heaven and opened the path to a new world.

상제님은 그렇게 이 대우주 천체권을 통치하시는 통치자이시다. 거느릴 통(統) 자, 다스릴 치(治) 자. 이 대우주 천체권의 살림살이를 혼자 (맡아서 다스리시는) 당신의 명령일하에 전부를 통치하시는 분이다. 이 가을철에는 그분이 오시지 않으면 역사적인 신명들을 통솔할 수가 없다. 다시 말하면 참하나님이라야 역사적인 신명의 모든 문제를 통제할 수 있다. 통제라면 알 것 아닌가. 바로 그 통치자 참하나님이 오셔서 선천 문화를 전부 묶어서 새 세상을 열어놓으셨다. (태상종도사님 말씀)

4주의 말씀 : 선천종교의 폐해를 지적하심

At a Church in Geumsan *Dojeon 5:9

1 One autumn day, Sangjenim traveled to Geumsan Township in Muju County with Hyeong-ryeol and Ho-yeon. 2 When they finally reached Geumsan late at night, they entered a Christian church where many people were listening to a preacher’s sermon.

3 “It is said that God so loved this world that He sent His only begotten son Jesus to us, so whoever believes in Jesus without any wavering in their hearts will gain everlasting life. 4 Now, let us all hold each other’s hands and believe together,” declared the preacher as he delivered an impassioned sermon.

How Dare You Deceive the Multitudes! *Dojeon 5:10

1 Sangjenim strode toward the pulpit, berating the preacher in a thunderous voice, “You should not teach such falsehoods! 2 The principle of all affairs in heaven and earth resides within all those who dwell in heaven and earth, so how dare you deceive the multitudes! 3 If you wish to teach, teach correctly, laying out a straight path. 4 Once a path has been laid, it spreads throughout the world like veins, so if what you teach is not the right path, do not teach it at all.”

5 Sangjenim continued, “Misguiding people even thrusts the Original Master of Heaven and Earth from His rightful place.” Sangjenim then rebuked the people for the grievous sin of disavowing their fathers and ancestors.

금산 예배당에 가심

1 하루는 상제님께서 형렬과 호연을 데리고 금산에 가시는데 날이 너무 어두워 호연이 자꾸만 넘어지는지라.
2 늦게 금산에 도착하시어 한 예배당에 가시니 사람들이 모여 목사의 설교를 듣고 있더라.
3 그가 이르기를 “하느님이 이 세상을 이토록 사랑하사 독생자 예수님을 주셨으니 누구든지 맘 변치 말고 믿으면 영생을 얻으리라 하셨습니다.
4 자, 우리 서로 서로 손잡고 함께 믿읍시다.” 하며 열변을 토하더라

어찌 중생을 속이느냐!

1 이때 상제님께서 앞으로 나가시며 큰 음성으로 꾸짖어 말씀하시기를 “그렇게 가르쳐서는 안 되느니라!
2 천지만사의 이치란 천지에 모여 사는 사람들 속에 있는 것이거늘 네 어찌 중생을 속이느냐!
3 가르치려거든 한길을 내듯 똑바로 가르쳐라.
4 길이 한 번 나면 그 길이 힘줄과 같이 천지 밖으로 벌어지나니 올바른 길이 아니면 가르치지 말라.” 하시니라.
5 또 말씀하시기를 “중생들을 그릇 인도하면 천지의 원 주인도 자리를 잡지 못하느니라!” 하시며 환부역조(換父易祖)의 큰 죄를 호되게 꾸짖으시니라.

I Am Maitreya *Dojeon 4:34

1 One day while sojourning with Geum-gok, Sangjenim all of sudden thunderously demanded of Geum-gok, “In whom will you believe? 2 Shakyamuni was conferred a destiny of only three thousand years. Do you not wish to receive a destiny of fifty thousand years? 3 The coming world shall be the world of Holy Maitreya Buddha-and it is I who am Maitreya. Should we not reunite in that future?”
4 “I shall no longer have faith in Shakyamuni Buddha,” Geum-gok answered. “I shall have faith only in You, venerable Gahng Jeung-san.”
Sangjenim laughed in delight. “Very well, preserve this faith in Me.”
5 Sangjenim often told Geum-gok, “Shakyamuni was conferred an authority lasting three thousand years, but his three thousand years will soon come to an end.”

Putrid Confucianism *Dojeon 3:60

9 While staying with Bo-gyeong later that month, Sangjenim commanded him, “Write the three words Confucianism, Buddhism, and Immortalism.” 10 He then instructed the disciples present, “Indicate one of the three, whichever you will.” Bo-gyeong pointed to Buddhism, and someone else pointed to Confucianism.
11 Sangjenim declared, “Confucianism has become putrid Confucianism.”

내가 곧 미륵이니

1 하루는 상제님께서 금곡과 함께 계실 때 문득 큰 소리로 말씀하시기를 “이놈아, 너는 누구를 믿을 것이냐?
2 석가는 삼천 년 도수밖에 안 되느니라. 너는 오만년 운수를 안 받을 테냐?” 하시고
3 “앞으로는 미륵존불의 세상이니라. 내가 곧 미륵이니 나중에 우리가 다시 만나야 하지 않겠느냐.” 하시니라.
4 이에 금곡이 아뢰기를 “저는 석가 부처를 믿지 않고 강증산 당신님만 믿겠습니다.” 하니 상제님께서 크게 웃으시며 “믿어 보소.” 하시니라.
5 상제님께서는 금곡에게 ‘석가가 삼천 년 도수인데 삼천 년이 곧 물러간다.’는 말씀을 자주 하시니라.

부유(腐儒)를 미워하심

10 성도들에게 “뜻 가는 대로 한 자씩 짚으라.” 하시니 보경은 불(佛)자를 짚고 또 한 사람은 유(儒)자를 짚거늘
11 말씀하시기를 “유(儒)는 부유(腐儒)니라.” 하시니라.

Sangjenim sent many sages to the East and West who established many religions such as Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, and Daoism. But without the one who governs affairs of the universe, Sangjenim, the problems of the universe cannot be solved.
그 동안 상제님이 내려보낸 동서양의 성자들과, 그들이 문 열어 놓은 불교, 기독교, 유교, 도교, 이슬람 문화 등이 있지만 상제님이 아니면, 이 천지 살림살이의 주인인 참 하나님이 아니면, 이 우주의 문제를 끌러낼 수 없다.

Sangjenim said, “It is I who sent Confucius, Shakyamuni, and Jesus to the world, to serve in My work.” (Dojeon 2:43:5)―a Christian I know who attended the largest church in Korea heard this passage, and he said that afterward he could not get sleep at all because the truth it contained had shocked and thrilled him so deeply. Although he had always attended church, his yearning for truth had never been satisfied. He felt something missing. ‘Where, when, why, how, and for whom was the universe born? What is the purpose of human existence?’ People asked these questions in vain―whether they were a child, a scholar, a politician, or anyone in the East and West, young or old―because they had not yet encountered a universal dao.
상제님은 일찍이 “석가, 공자, 예수는 내가 쓰기 위해서 내려보냈다.”(道典 2:40:6)고 하셨다. 언젠가 우리나라에서 가장 큰 교회를 다니는 어떤 사람이, 이 한 말씀에서 진리의 해답을 찾았다며 너무도 기쁘고 한편으로는 큰 충격을 받아서 “그러면 그렇지!” 하고 잠을 못 잤다고 했다. 지금까지는 진리에 대한 욕구 충족이 안 된 것이다. 뭔가 만족을 못했던 것이다. ‘우주는 어디에서, 어떻게, 왜, 무엇을 위해 태어났는가? 인간의 존재 목적은 무엇인가?’이 문제에 대해서 어린아이가 물어도, 학자가 물어도, 정치인이 물어도, 동서고금의 그 누가 물어도 “그것은 바로 이것 때문이다. 그것은 바로 이것이다!”라고, 보편적인 대도의 말씀을 전해 줄 수 있는 큰 진리를 못 만났던 것이다.
