Brandon: I read the book you gave me. But there’s something I can’t understand.
네가 준 책 읽어 봤는데 이해 안 되는 부분이 있어.

I: What is it?
뭔데?

Brandon: It says Sangjenim assumed the Mandate of the Autumn God, but who did Sangjenim receive this mandate from?
상제님께서 서신사명을 맡으셨다고 하는데, 상제님께서 누구한테서 명을 받으셨다는 거야?

I: ‘Autumn God’ stands for Sangjenim. So basically it’s talking about the mandate that Sangjenim takes on Himself as His responsibility.
사실 여기서 서신은 상제님을 뜻하는 거야. 그러니까 상제님이 맡으신 사명이란 뜻이지.

Brandon:　I don’t understand. Isn’t He the One who sent saints and sages like Buddha and Jesus to earth? Couldn’t He just send other saints down to take the mandate?
이 부분이 이해가 안 돼. 상제님은 부처님이나 예수님 같은 성자들에게 사명을 내리셨던 분인데 그냥 다른 성자를 내보내서 명을 맡기시면 되잖아?

I: Of course, He could have. But there are things that only He is capable of. It’s the work of harvesting the fruit of humanity at the time of the Autumn Gaebyeok and this can only be done by Sangenim. This also is predestined by the principle of the universe.
물론 그렇게 하실 수도 있지. 하지만 상제님만이 하실 수 있는 일이 있거든. 바로 가을개벽기에 인간 열매를 추수하시는 일인데 이것은 반드시 상제님께서만 하실 수 있는 일이지. 그리고 이 모든 건 우주의 이법으로 정해져 있어.

Brandon: Something that can only be done by Him and it’s a predestined work for Him to take on?
상제님께서만 하실 수 있는 일이고 이미 우주의 이법으로 미리 정해져 있다고?

I: Brandon. In order for you to understand this, we have to talk about the five elements. It’s a little bit complicated. You think you can handle it?
브랜든, 그걸 이해하려면 오행의 원리를 먼저 알아야 하는데. 좀 어려운데 괜찮겠어?

Brandon: Come on. I’ve heard of yin and yang and the five elements before.
야, 나도 음양오행은 들어 본 적 있거든?

I: That’s exactly it. The yin yang and the five elements. His Holiness the Jongdosanim taught us that from the most broad perspective of the principles, yin and yang are the factors that bring change and transformation in the universe. He said the two qis of yin and yang keep all things in the universe alive and changing. And from this the five elements come out.
그래, 바로 그거야. 음양오행. 종도사님께서는 이 우주를 변화하게 하는 요소가 크게 보면 음양이라고 하셨어. 음과 양이라는 두 기운이 우주 만유를 살아 움직이게 한다고 하셨거든. 이 음양에서 오행이 나오는데...

Brandon: Right, five elements do come from yin and yang.
응 음양에서 오행이 나오지.

I: This yin and yang that comprises all things in this universe is diversified again into the five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. All things in the world are being dominated by the principle of yin and yang and, if you take a closer look, these five elements.
이 우주의 만물을 구성하는 음양이 다시 목, 화, 토, 금, 수의 오행으로 분화돼. 세상 모든 만물이 크게는 음양, 그리고 더 깊게 들어가면 오행의 법칙에 의해 지배를 받는다고 생각하면 돼.

Brandon: I remember this from the cosmic year.
우주 1년 할 때 분명히 배웠던 거 같아.

I: You’re right! I can just relate the five elements to the cosmic year principle from last time. You remember that whether it’s a cosmic year or an earthly year, a cycle of a year unfolds in accordance with the principle of birth-growth-harvest-rest, right? So you can pair each season to each element. Wood element is strongest during spring; fire energy is dominant during summer; metal is the qi representing autumn; and winter is the time when water qi flourishes.

Brandon: Ah...I think I remember. Wood energy gives birth, fire energy makes things grow, and metal qi makes possible fruition, while water energy leads all life to rest, right?
아... 기억난다. 목(木) 기운은 낳는 거고, 화(火) 기운은 성장시키는 거고, 금(金) 기운은 열매를 맺게 하는 거고, 수(水) 기운은 쉬게 하는 거지?

Brandon: Come on. I’m really smart. Anyways, what about earth energy? It doesn’t have a season to connect with.

I: Earth energy is taking on the role of balancing and supporting so that the four energies can be harmonized. In a sense, it’s the most important element. It takes on a role of helping the seasons change from one season to the next, but the most important work of the earth energy is seen during the change from summer to autumn.
토(土) 기운은 나머지 네 기운이 서로 잘 조화될 수 있도록 조율하고 도와주는 역할을 해. 어떻게 보면 가장 중요한 역할이지. 한 계절에서 다음 계절로 넘어가는 중간 역할을 하는데, 토 기운의 가장 중요한 역할은 여름에서 가을로 넘어가는 하추교역기에 나타나.

Brandon: Can you explain to me a little more?
조금 더 자세히 설명해 줄 수 있어?

I: Let’s use the five elements to explain. During the transition from autumn to winter, metal energy gives life to water energy making a smooth transition. When it changes from winter to spring, water energy gives life to wood energy making another smooth transition. And when it changes from spring to summer, wood energy gives life to fire energy to make a smooth transition but the problem occurs when it goes from summer to autumn.
오행으로 예를 들자. 가을에서 겨울로 갈 때는 금생수(金生水) 해서 부드럽게 넘어가고, 겨울에서 봄으로 갈 때는 수생목(水生木) 해서 부드럽게 넘어가고 봄에서 여름으로 갈 때는 목생화(木生火) 해서 부드럽게 넘어가는데, 여름에서 가을로 넘어갈 때는 어떤 문제가 생기거든.

Brandon: What kind of problem?
어떤 문제?

I: Fire energy of summer attempts to melt metal energy of autumn. All the sins and faults of the Early Heaven’s mutual conflict and domination is bound to explode in a time period called gaebyeok, when the end of summer and the beginning of autumn collide.
여름의 불기운이 가을의 쇠기운을 녹여 버리려고 하는 거야. 선천 상극에서 비롯된 모든 죄악이 여름철 말과 가을철 초가 충돌하는 개벽이라는 시간대에 들어서 폭발해 버리는 거지.

Brandon: The fire energy of summer tries to bring everything down.
여름철의 불기운이 모든 것을 무너뜨려 버리는구나.

I: Yea. And one more thing we need to know is the directions based on the five elements. ‘Wood represents east’, ‘fire is south’, ‘metal is west’, ‘water is north’, and ‘earth is center’. Of course, there is a center position in the universe as well, and that is Sangjenim.

Brandon: Sangjenim is in the center. Wait a minute! That means fire makes earth, and earth makes metal and earth is Sangjenim!

I: Yes! So Sangjenim who is the earth energy takes on the fire energy and produces the Later Heaven’s cosmic autumn through the principle of ‘fire gives life to earth, and earth gives life to metal.’ That is the ultimate mandate that Sangjenim took on Himself, as the God that establishes the Later Heaven’s cosmic autumn. It is the mandate that no one else can take on except Himself.

Brandon: In other words, Sangjenim sits on the earth energy direction, and He came as a human at this time of metal-fire interchange to bring forth the cosmic autumn world.
