Sangjenim Has Each Disciple Offer Cheongsu and Meditate

When Sangjenim had the disciples meditate,
He would have each of them offer a bowl of cheongsu and
chant mantras; hence, the disciples would each bring a bowl
for cheongsu, such as a ceramic bowl or a gourd,
which they filled with clean water and placed in front of themselves.
They would draw their chins slightly inward,
close their outer eyes and open their inner eyes,
then gaze into the bowl and begin to chant.
-English Dojeon 3:143:1-3-

When Sangjenim had the disciples meditate,
He would have each of them (각자 ~하도록 하셨다)
offer a bowl of cheongsu and chant mantras;
hence, the disciples would each bring a bowl
for cheongsu, (그릇을 들고 왔다)
such as a ceramic bowl or a gourd,
which they filled with clean water
and placed in front of themselves.
They would draw their chins slightly inward,
close their outer eyes (겉눈은 감고)
and open their inner eyes, (속눈은 뜨고)
then gaze into the bowl and begin to chant.(청수그릇을 응시하며 주송했다)

3. Conversation

Brandon: I’m not going home today until you teach me the Taeeulju Mantra meditation.

I: Haha. You were serious? Okay. But before we meditate, there are basic things you must learn.

Brandon: Basic things?
기본?

I: Yeah, the basics. Before we can get to the meditation part, you must learn to offer fresh water and the four bows. Jeung San Do practitioners offer a bowl of fresh water and give the four bows to Sangjenim, Taemonim and ancestral spirits before we start meditation.

Brandon: Offer a bowl of fresh water? Why is that important?

I: Offering a bowl of fresh water is to purify our body and mind. The fresh water is a symbol of source of life, and purity. When we pray or practice meditation, the fresh water becomes a medium that connects us to Sangjenim.

Brandon: Water being the source of life sounds very familiar. I think I learned it in school, too.

I: Think about it. Even when we were in our moms’ stomach we were covered with the amniotic fluid. And water accounts for more than 60% of your body composition. This is why we offer water that symbolizes purity and the source of life.

Brandon: I see.

I: When I sincerely offer a bowl of fresh water, I feel like I’m connected to Sangjenim and Taemonim.

Brandon: Like the feeling I have when I eat a Chocopie? I feel like I’m connected to a chocolate heaven.

I: Yeah... uh huh... Something like that. Okay. Now, we do the four-bows like this. You bow down four times because you’re offering this to the highest ruling God in the universe. So this is the ‘embracing-heaven-and-caressing-earth bows’, which means you’re becoming one with heaven and earth.

Brandon: You do this every time before meditation?

I: Yep. Everyday. We usually offer fresh water twice a day, once in the morning, and once in the evening. Then after we do the four-bows, we recite the ‘Prayer from the Heart’, and start meditating. Since I’m busy getting ready for school in the morning, I only have time for offering water and giving bows. So, I meditate at night before going to bed. But the best time for meditation is from 3 A.M. to 5 A.M. in the early morning.

Brandon: What? From 3 A.M. to 5 A.M? That’s when my grandma goes to early morning prayer meetings. That must be so hard.

I: Of course it’s gonna be hard but you’ll feel much more pure and auspicious energy when you meditate during this hour. The Hour of Tiger, which is from 3 A.M. to 5 A.M., is the time that the qi of human beings arises during a day.

Brandon: But still... I like sleep better than pure energy...

I: Don’t worry, I’m not gonna twist your arm. Next, when you meditate, your posture is really important. You can sit in a cross-legged or kneeling position, but the most important thing is that you must make your back straight. His Holiness the Jongdosanim taught us that the spinal column supports the body like a pillar and connects the heaven and earth. And keep your neck straight by pulling down your chin a little bit.

Brandon: What should I do with my hands?

I: Grab your fists lightly and place them on your thighs so that you can keep your shoulders from slouching.

Brandon: Should I close my eyes?

I: Yes, but close your eyes gently, not tightly. Sangjenim said, “Close your outer eyes and open your inner eyes,” so you can slightly see your nose and get a glimpse of what’s in front of you. This helps you keep your mind in the middle path. If you open your eyes, you’ll be distracted, and you’ll easily fall asleep if you close your eyes tightly. Try to do it.

Brandon: Okay. Is my belly supposed to be squeezing and tight like this when I'm sitting cross legged?

I: You gotta loosen your belt, Brandon. We use our lower dantian to breathe while meditating, so you shouldn’t wear anything that feels too tight around belly. Please get yourself comfortable and loose clothes next time, OK?

Brandon: Understood. So are we finally gonna start learning the mantra meditation?

I: Yes. His Holiness the Jongdosanim said that when you chant the Taeeulju Mantra, you must place your consciousness in the lower dantian or focus on the sound of the Taeeulju Mantra, in order to be one with the sound of the mantra. And I know that you’re not perfectly good at speaking Korean alphabets, but please try your best to pronounce the words as accurately as you can, OK? I’ll chant together with you.
