I am the Taeeulju Mantra, and the Taeeulju Mantra is I.

Lee, Kwon-hwan (Male, 36) / Jonggam, Gumi Wonpyeong Dojang

My Experience on February 4

It is an honor to present my experiences in the presence of His Holiness the Jongdosanim. I wish to share with you a few of my own experiences even though I am lacking in many areas and am unworthy.

I initiated into Jeung San Do on April 11, 2010 (DG 140), through the efforts of a person who was serving at headquarters at the time.

First of all, I want to share with you my experience of February 4, at the Gumi Wonpyeong Dojang, on ‘Regional dogong Meditation Day’. That day, my dogong was rather unusual, and I could not decide whether I came for dogong meditation or to perform a mask dance. Even before the dogong started, my heart was beating fast and I found it difficult to calm myself. As the practitioners entered the shrine, I beheld many ancestors following their descendants in joy. Chanting the mantras inside the shrine, I thought to myself, “Something tells me that today’s dogong is going to be special.”

When we began the dogong, spiritual beings near the ceiling of the shrine poured very pure water upon the tops of all the descendants’ heads. It felt as refreshing as a shower.

My ancestors were saying, “Well done.” “You are doing a fine thing.” “Thank you.” “You have our gratitude.” “Everything shall be well, so do not worry—just strive earnestly and sincerely.” Overwhelmed with emotions, I choked up with tears, and I cried out to them, “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I’ll redeem myself by being a dao practitioner who requites benevolence all the more faithfully,” even as I continued to chant in my mind. I also heard other ancestors saying, “Thank you for coming, my children. You have done well in coming here. Even when you face difficult times, we are always watching over you and aiding you. So remember the time of your initiation, and continue to strive onward.”

Afterward, all the ancestors danced in high spirits as if they were part of a traditional samulnori performance. There were ancestors dressed as aristocrats from the Three Kingdoms period, others in hanbok from the Joseon Dynasty, and numerous ancestors clad in the attire of army generals from their eras; and dozens of spirits of children who had short hair and wore one-piece skirts with ribbons and overalls were all chanting while playing the Korean drum and practicing dogong meditation. And the spirits said, “That is correct.” “Good.” “Well done.” “Yes.” “Heaven and earth’s power of creation-transformation: the Taeeulju Mantra. Heaven and earth’s power of creation-transformation: the Taeeulju Mantra.”

Several spirits standing on the altars nodded and smiled, saying, “You are performing the dogong quite well.” When they said this, I began to choke up with tears in spite of myself, and I danced a mask dance like a mad, possessed person while on my knees. My ancestors said, “All is well. You may stand and perform a mask dance in high spirits.” Without conscious thought, I rose to my feet and danced a mask dance as if I were performing a samulnori.

As I started dancing a mask dance with my ancestors, I wondered, “Is this a special day?” And, dancing, I said, “I will not know how to put this experience into words,” but a spirit I did not recognize told me, “Simply describe what you have seen. We will watch over you, so you need not worry. You will eventually understand for yourself.”

Even though I am terrible at dancing, I moved my arms rhythmically and spun my head in circles, performing a mask dance. At that moment, I witnessed a boy and a girl who appeared kindergarten age. They came to me and presented to me a spiral-shaped candy of white, pink, and blue. “Please take this,” they said, smiling and laughing. I didn’t know whether I should eat the candy or not, but I said, “Thank you, I appreciate it.” The moment I took the candy, it was absorbed into my body and I felt a very sweet taste in my mouth. Also, I saw among my other ancestors my eldest aunt, who had died at age three, and who I have honored through an ancestral repayment chiseong. She too smiled radiantly and patted my back, which moved me.

As if it were a party for children, dozens of child spirits cavorted, saying, “Hey! This is fun!” as they performed a sort of a dogong on their own. The spirits who gave me the candy ran around me in circles. Their smiles were so bright and pure that the sight also made me smile as I danced.

It was the first time since I started dogong meditation at the dojang that I became one with the sound of the drums and the mantra, practicing the dogong as though mad or possessed, shouting as if I were going to explode the dojang with my voice or shake the ground with my chant, all while performing the dogong in tandem with ancestors, young children, and kindergarten spirits. Moreover, emotions I did not understand made it impossible for me to stop weeping, so I could not chant out loud. Instead, I performed inner chanting during the dogong as I did a mask dance.

Midway through the dogong, a door from a different dimension opened in the center of the back of the shrine, and I beheld light shining through this door. Amidst the radiance arrived Sangjenim, Taemonim, Taesabunim, and Taesamonim in their imperial robes, escorted on the left and right by spirits, commander spirits, and female immortals. They rode two horse carriages each drawn by seven to ten horses, two of them riding in each carriage; and upon arrival, they took their seats on the altars.

This was my first time beholding them in their imperial robes from so near, and I was curious to hear what they would say. The smiling Taesabunim shone with a radiant light the hue of white jade, and he wore a crown on his head and a robe bearing the design of a dragon and the taegeuk symbol. Smiling and laughing, he said, “Chant louder, in high spirits.” To my amazement, all the ancestors said, “Yes, sir. We shall do as you command!” And then they chanted in louder voices, “Heaven and earth’s power of creation-transformation: the Taeeulju Mantra,” as they danced a mask dance.

Smiling, Taesabunim pointed at the practitioners and asked Sangjenim, “Sangjenim, should they not be given another chance?” Sangjenim gazed upon them with a pleased look, and I heard Him say, “Indeed.” Taemonim and Taesamonim then said, “You must always remain awakened.”

I had been so moved from the beginning of the dogong that now, hearing them speaking, I could not stop the flow of my tears. “Thank you,” I said. “All I can do is simply thank you. I will be reborn as a practitioner who requites your benevolence.”

After so long a time performing the dogong as if I wanted the entire dojang to shake, I nevertheless ended the dogong in a very clear state of mind. I will never forget this day of dogong, when I exuberantly did a mask dance for the first time. I offer a prayer of gratitude to the four lords of the universe—heaven, earth, sun, and moon—and my ancestors, for allowing me to practice the dogong with such immense energy.

My Experience on January 31

I’d like to speak about another personal experience. It happened on January 31, just after this year’s Jeongsam Chiseong (Lunar January 3). I’ll first briefly explain the back story of this personal experience.

In order for me to balance and harmonize my faith with my daily life and to convey the teachings of life in this recession, I started working at my current place of employment, which observes a three-shift rotation. Since my job involved shift work, I didn’t have much free time for conversations with coworkers. And since my work environment involved the use of industrial alcohol, I started having health issues. Yet, I still believed that my ancestors were going to help, and I made time here and there to give seven of my coworkers the Hwandangogi booklet.

There was a coworker in his early fifties who showed some interest, but personal issues forced me to change my work hours and work station, so I couldn’t continue this attempt to convey the teachings. But I had already been praying very hard for several months, so I earnestly asked my ancestors, “I know that you changed my work station to a more comfortable one because of my health concerns, but if you alter it this way, how can you expect me to share the teachings with this man? But for now, I’ll believe in you and follow your guidance.”

At my new work station, I began to regain my health. Eventually, during my breaks and meal times, I started listening to the dao lectures through my smart phone. Also, I chanted the Taeeulju Mantra all day, believing that it would purify and cleanse the energy of the company. Finally, on January 31, I received a message from my ancestors:

“Since you have inquired so devotedly, take these words of blessings.

True Taeeullangs are ones who have fixed their heart on the middle path. They do not envy, sabotage, hate, or covet. They keep their sights on the grand purpose of Sangjenim’s work of heaven and earth and conduct themselves accordingly. You understand, do you not?

Since all of you practitioners were heroes who shook your countries in your past lives, you were brimming with confidence while in heaven, believing you could change the world in an instant—but has it not proven difficult incarnating into this era of resolving bitterness and grief and overseeing human affairs? Is this not so?

You were the last great heroes, sages, and saints born in history, but this life will be the first of its kind throughout all your reincarnations—how difficult it must be. But earning your right to become a leader of the twelve thousand dao workers who bring closure to a chapter in cosmic history is incomparable to any other life.

Before history calls upon you to serve in the great work at heaven and earth’s destined time, you will be concealed so that no one will be able to recognize you. And when you stand forth before the world at the final hour of history, the people of the world will be stunned to behold you dao workers, for they will have never imagined the likes of you.

Heaven and earth are keeping your true nature a secret, granting you naught but a noble mindset and awareness. And in this age of the resolution of bitterness and grief and wish fulfillment, there is indeed a vast disparity of awakening and consciousness between individuals. Even though you dao practitioners all appear to be the same, your individual capacities and meritorious deeds and virtue differ vastly from those of each other. The main principals are destined to come forth in the end.

Every dao practitioner needs to be certified by heaven and earth to complete their mission as dao workers. You have been chosen according to your meritorious deeds and virtue in the Early Heaven. Our family chose you. And you yourself chose this life as your last reincarnation in order to participate in the great work of bringing history to completion.

When you were in heaven, all of your past lives were scrutinized and judged by high spirits so that your reincarnation could be determined. Numerous ancestors have garnered virtue for generations to receive you as their descendants, and this line of ancestors stretching all the way to your parents endured lives of indescribable sacrifices for your success.

Since time immemorial, plans and efforts have been made to send you forth into the world, and so it is that you have incarnated on earth. This is why you are precious dao workers—noble descendants who we in the heavens would not trade for anything. The way to requite such sacrifices by your ancestors is with an ancestral repayment chiseong, so is the ancestral repayment chiseong not a paramount blessing?

Countless ancestors queue to have their descendants meet you, for you have reincarnated into this world to execute the gaebyeok of human affairs. But though these descendants are shown and introduced to you, the choice remains yours because you are the sovereigns of human affairs. During the time of gaebyeok, the immense authority and responsibility of determining life or death for descendants will reside in your hands.

You yourselves do not truly know who you are, but a time shall come when you discover that you were all great heroes who left your imprint on history. Every one of you represents heaven, earth, sun, and moon, and acts on their behalf; and so you are the final arbiters in the fulfilling of heaven and earth’s grand destiny.

You are the ones chosen to actualize the healing-unification work of uitong that shall bring cosmic history to completion—the ones who dwelled in the ninth heaven as noble spiritual beings. You cannot conceive how many struggle to receive you into their family; and many who wait in an endless line to do so never shall, due to their ancestors’ wrongdoings and lack of virtue.

You are the ones who will complete and culminate the universe, resolving all its problems—the chosen ones of a new universe. The ultimate purpose of each family line is to sire a descendant who will become one of the twelve thousand enlightened ones.

You must know that just as death is feared and hated on earth, it is highly difficult to qualify to reincarnate as a human being in the heavens. Heaven and earth are in a state of extreme emergency and the Year of the Red Rooster has now arrived, so embrace the secrets of the spiritual realm that Jongdosanim has given you and always remember what sort of being you truly are. You are the sovereigns of human affairs. Human affairs shall be dictated by you.

We can only set you in charge, follow your lead, and bear in mind that you are the main principals. You must have seen in your meditation that ancestors are lining up simply to have their descendants receive a booklet of truth or a pamphlet, or to have their descendants at least hear the words of truth. To ancestors, you are the absolute beings who determine their descendants’ and family’s life and death—as fearful and mighty in their eyes as living gods.

This gaebyeok is the great gaebyeok that will bring the history of the universe to a completion, so it is most frightening. When that time comes, you will witness with your own two eyes the deaths of countless people who will suddenly lose consciousness as if electrocuted, their bodies arching backward like a bow. If you are not prepared, there will not be anything to receive. So incur no grief, become one with the spirit realm, and act in union with the spirits. All ancestors are struggling to save their descendants, so press onward—strive with all your heart.”

This is the record of the message, which I even wrote down in order to not forget the words of my ancestors. It has jolted me awake, and I feel with all my being what it means to truly be a Taeeullang practitioner.
